BANGKOK: -- Privy Council of Thailand president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda this morning opened his Sisao Theves official residence to welcome well-wishers to pay respect and receive his blessing ahead of the Songkran holidays or the Thai traditional New Year on Wednesday.

Leading top military brass, cabinet ministers, senior police officers, representatives of public and charity organisations to give good wishes and receive his blessing was Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha.

Gen Prayut was first to pay respect by pouring water on the palms of the Statesman as a Thai traditional way of showing respect on the Thai New, and received his blessing.

After all well wishers giving their wishes, the council president thanked all his wishers to come on this significant Thai New Year day.

He admired the prime minister for the preservation of such Thai culture saying he has been performing the duty well as a Thai and that should be set as a precedent for all Thais to follow.

He said retaining the cultural identity of Thai culture as what the prime minister was doing today was also to protect the country and bring happiness to the people.

He wished the prime minister, all well wishers, and the Thai people good health and happiness.

He also wished that all what the prime minister wished to do for the country and for the people become true and successful.

How nice, having words of praise bestowed upon oneself,

how nice keeping culture alive,

how nice bringing happiness to the people,

how nice to have your wishes for the future endorsed,

Such niceness is nice.

Another step backwards for the ordinary folk.

Oh I don't think the ordinary people come into this anywhere.

The people lining up to perform have no interest in the ordinary people, other than a vague awareness of the serfs whose labours provide the nations (and therefore their) wealth.

The ordinary people are excluded, and not interested.

Its like a catwalk for 1970's bond villain fashion.

You are spot on. Ask an upscale, intelligent, Thai man in his late sixties, preferably after a couple of tall whiskeys with light water, for the inside story on scandalous philandering back in the day and then reread this OP.

the "good people" paying homage to the "good people"

Bet there were no coyote dancers and lao Khao was not offered!

But how many "mia noi s " do you think the collected ensemble possess?

I have always seen General Prem being referred to as a 'Statesman'. What does it mean and how does one qualify yo become a Satesman, or was it Royally bestowed? I thought he was a military dictator in the past?

Isn't that qualification enough?? In future years it will be the PM's turn.
