SONGKHLA: -- A police captain and a 4-year old boy were killed and at least seven other people were injured when a motorcycle bomb was detonated next to the victim’s pickup truck in front of Jana district railway station in Songkhla province Monday evening.

The victim was identified as Pol Cpt Yodchai Boonsong, deputy inspector for suppression of Jana district police.

Initial report said that suspected separatists laid in wait in a motorcycle which was rigged with explosives at the railway station. When they said Pol Cpt Boonsong parked his truck in front of the station, they rode the rigged motorbike to park near one side of the truck and walked away to a safe distance and detonated the bomb.

The force of the explosion killed the police captain and a 4-year old boy, Ahmad Yazeen Mudson. A police officer and seven civilians were also injured by flying shrapnels from the blast.

Police suspected separatist elements of carrying out the bomb attack.

SONGKHLA: -- The deadly motorcycle bomb explosion at Jana railway station in Songkhla province sparked heightened security at all railway stations and bus terminals in the trouble plagued southern provinces today as people are travelling to celebrate Songkran and tourists are coming in to join the celebration.

The explosion yesterday killed one police officer and a four year old boy and injured 15 others.

Order was sending out to all security officials to increase security checks on vehicles entering tourist towns, and increase patrols at railway stations and bus terminals in Songkhla.

Passenger luggage were all checked with metal detectors to ensure no bombs were inside before boarding trains, particularly at Hat Yai railway station.

Meanwhile security officials were checking all CCTV cameras at various places in Jana to track down the two bomb suspects who were seen in video footage before the explosion.

One motorcyclist, in Muslim hijab dress, was seen in the video parked a motorcycle alongside a police pickup truck and walked towards a waiting motorcyclist before driving away.

A few moments later, the police officer, Pol Capt Yodchai Boonsuk, walked to the truck and was about to open the door when the bomb in the motorcycle exploded.

He was killed instantly while the child near the station’s playground was also killed.

Security officials said the motorcycle was robbed from a southern district to turn into motorcycle bomb.

It was detonated by radio transmitter.

Jana police said they have questioned several witnesses and said they expected to issue warrants for the arrest of the bomb suspects soon.

The video was CCTV footage playing on a computer screen, likely in the police station, which was re-filmed from the screen by the Thairath journalist with a mobile phone, hence its shakiness.

The hijab/burkha was most likely worn to disguise the face and not because they were a katoey rolleyes.gif
