BANGKOK: -- The National Water Resources Committee chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha will hold a meeting on April 20 water management projects for this fiscal year which cover water for consumption, farming and for ecological conservation.

Agriculture deputy permanent secretary Mr Lertvirote Kowattana said that the Agriculture Ministry would propose the committee to adjust the long-term water resources management projects by focusing on 15 top priority projects to be implemented as of this year.

The top priority projects including water diversion from Salween river into Bhumibol dam, Huey Luang development project in Udon Thani, water diversion into Lampao and Ubonrat dams, Khong-Loei-Chee-Moon water diversion project, development of irrigated land in the Northeast and water resources development project in Phuket for tourism purpose.

The committee will also be asked to fast-track the eastern floodway project to divert water from Manorom sluice gate in Chainat province into the Gulf through Klong Dan and Bang Pakong. The floodway will increase the flow of water from 300 cubic metre/second to 1,000 cubic metre/second which will help prevent flooding in the future.

Meteorological deputy director-general Songkran Aksorn predicted that the rainy season this year was expected to start in the third week of May to be followed with more rains until mid-July.

The department also predicts the country will hit by three tropical storms this year with two of them in July.

"The National Water Resources Committee chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha will hold a meeting on April 20 water management projects..."

Well, that should solve the water crisis. Only a matter of months before Thailand becomes the international hub of water, and be able to export enough to alleviate the affects of any drought in the world.

28th month of drought, 5 weeks before the rains come, and the PM is set to chair National Water Resources Committee meeting... What great timing!

I wonder when he will chair the National Flood Disaster Committee meeting, February next year (7 months after the floods start)??

"Instead of mindlessly wasting water, New Year revelers should be mindful of the crushing drought,"

a local newspaper said in an editorial last week calling for "a dry Songkran" to show solidarity with the country's farmers."

"Twenty seven of Thailand's 77 provinces have been declared drought zones with the lowest level of rainfall in more than two decades.

Farmers have been ordered to curtail their water use and scale back planting. Tap-water rationing is in effect in certain provinces."

Having read all these posts condemning the current government for doing nothing I have not seen a single mention of the governments going back 20 or more years who also did nothing though several of them did talk a lot.

Remember the previous elected PTP government who, the years after the Bangkok floods opened all the dams and against all advice drained them down to below the safe level to stop the floods in Bangkok and the central plains. Well that bit of the plan worked. In fact it worked so well that in part it caused the worst drought in 50 or 60 years.

All the governments have taken decisions based on what benefits themselves best at that time.

The 2011 flood could have been managed better - but certain politicians and powerful interests needed to get their harvests in first, and then make sure central Bangkok wasn't inconvenienced in the slightest. Sod everywhere else including the areas deliberately flooded and kept flooded to keep Bangkok dry.

It remains to be seen how this will be managed,

But the problem goes back decades - governments driven by self interest, corruption meaning little gets done and what does is often done badly. And then the politicians simply lie, blame anyone but themselves and refuse to learn and change because it's so lucrative for them the way it is.
