Watana's daughter seeks US hand to look into human rights contravention

BANGKOK: -- The daughter of former commerce minister Watana Muangsook today sought the hand of the US Embassy to look into her father's detention for attitude test by the military junta if it is a violation of human right.

Ms Weerada Muangsook today submitted a letter written by her father Watana before being detained on Monday to the US Embassy staff.

In the letter, Watana requested the US to investigate whether the National Council for Peace and Order abused power or not in detaining a person with different political views, or whether the action contravened human rights.

Earlier yesterday Ms Weerada also sought help from the European Union over the same charge of human rights violation.

The military authorities did not escort Mr Watana to the Criminal Court to report himself this morning to face criminal charges files against him under the Computer Crime Act for criticising the draft constitution and referendum.

His lawyer and former finance minister Kittirat Na Ranong were on hand to receive Watana at the court, but he didn’t show up.

Watana was reported to be in the military custody for attitude adjustment course at Army’s Surasi barrack in Kanchanaburi province.

His lawyer Narinpong Jinapak said he was told by the court official that the military has notified the Criminal Court that it detained Watana under the order of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and he will be escorted to the court to hear charges on April 25.

The military will allow the daughter and lawyer to visit him at the barrack tomorrow, he said.

Visit Guantanamo and then talk to the US again...

You don't think there is a bit of a difference between a suspected terrorist and someone who said they don't like a charter... which most people on here also do not like. I suspect if they began rounding up TV posters for similar attitude adjustments the opinion would be different.

I hate the junta as much as anyone, but if me and fellow 'farangs' had told her what we thoight of her father and his ilk when they were in power, she'd have called us a 'farang' and told us to mind our own business.

Now she turns to foreigners when the boot's on the other foot. Trying to have your cake and eat it.

And by the way, no I don't think her father should be in detention for speaking out. But he probably should be in prison for other things he's done.

Watana is playing a game. He knew exactly what he was doing and that he would end up in detention for "attitude adjustment". Just another in a long line of people using politics for self (long term) gain.

Your keyword is 'Suspected'! Any difference to the detentions in Malaysia and Singapore under their Internal Security Act?

They called it 'detention without trial'.

Another part of the premeditated plan to make the government look bad and to incite unrest

- in favor of the corrupt governments before which want to have their nose in the trough again

in the name of what they call democwacy (whatever they mean with this word or how they think it should be pronounced)

Probably on orders from Thaksin they are just trying to stir things up..Most of these guys belong in Prison which is they can put this guy. They are already put together a plan before to go the embassy trying to get all the press they can. So when this same bunch giant telling the Americans you farang not your business get out of Thailand they are begging forhelp. Thaksin himself has 13 very serious corruption cases against him which would give him over 100 years in Prison even if the court's gave medium sentences not max.

Put this guy in jail and let him rot.

Along with every other local politician since the beginning of time probably.

One would think that being hauled in for Attitude Adjustment , anything under section 44 or restrictions of media information and freedom of speech , would constitute a breach of any human rights , then on the other hand the Junta keep assuring the international community , that they are on top of Human rights abuse within the fishing , labour and people trafficking area's , yet they treat anyone who opposes their point of view with disdain, to the point of paranoid phobia , hardly a good recommendation for human rights in Thailand.........................................coffee1.gif

What you are saying , is what comes around goes around , same will apply to the Junta in the end.

Do you think they should go through the expense of a trial before they put him in jail to rot?

I guess you don't follow the situation in Thailand very closely or you would have known that the junta is perfectly capable of looking bad without any help from anyone.

Bla, bla, bla, Thaksin, bla, bla, bla.

I honestly think that if the junta started murdering little babies that would be OK for a few of the posters because of the bogeyman in Dubai.

Disgusting.

Unfortunately the military cannot both abuse human rights and occupy the moral high ground.

Once they take this course of action it effectively wipes the slate clean. When a champion of democracy emerges at the other end of the dark tunnel of Dick Tatership, it is quite likely to be one of these ex PTP people of questionable history but who had the balls to stand up and be counted when the Army tried to ride roughshod over the people. Prayuth's goons are casting Watana as a hero instead of the villain you would prefer him to be.

How many times in how many countries have ex-political prisoners emerged as the leader of their liberated country.

But Thai Generals don't know (or don't acknowledge) history and believe in self serving myths of their own devising

Guantanamo is for terrorist murderers, this guy expressed an opinion. Slight difference I'd say.

"...expressed an opinion".

Here's a question for you: do you believe it's just possible he has a carefully planned agenda?

Here's a clue: he was one of the main ring leaders to try to get an amnesty rushed through parliament at 3:00 am in the morning when Thailand was as asleep.

What a load of crap.

".. it is quite likely to be one of these ex PTP people of questionable history but who had the balls to stand up and be counted when the Army tried to ride roughshod over the people"

...ex PTP people (In this case the main highly immoral instigator / pusher to try to get an amnesty through parliament at 3:00 am in the morning when Thailand was asleep, for a convicted criminal who jumped bail promises).

Do you honestly and genuinely believe this guy is on the up and up and has genuine intentions to become a genuine and clean champion to take Thailand into genuine real democracy? A simple yes or no will do.

There's a theoretical difference but in practice Guantanamo was and is a travesty. Many innocent people held without trial for years in ugly conditions. I'm ashamed just thinking about it.

Yes, or someone like him. His current image is being laundered by the actions of the junta and he is given the opportunity to appear reasonable in the face of unreasonable actions taken against him. Can you not see him auditioning for the part of "opposition leader" at every stage managed press opportunity. He is enabled by Prayuth and his goon squad to take the position of putting the welfare of the country and the people in front of his own personal liberty and safety, and standing up bravely to oppression, however disingenuous that may be. In political terms he is running rings round the dinosaur brains that are trying to contain him. Even an Adolf Hitler could play the role he is being handed and come out with public sympathy at the end.

Seriously, all the country will need, today, tomorrow or next year, is a nucleus around which opposition can crystallise. If he turns out to be that nucleus, it will not matter whether he sponsored an unwise and unsuccessful amnesty bill. That was then, this is now and peoples memories, present company excepted, are really not that long.

Simply - yes
