Asia to foster greater cooperation against natural disasters

BANGKOK, 22 April 2016 (NNT)-The government and the private sectors are expected to unite in stronger cooperation against natural disasters via discussions currently being held at the Asian Business Forum 2016 Risk Reduction and Resilience Building.

Interior Minister General Anupong Paojinda, who presided over the forum, said today it is important for businesses to become resilient in the face of natural disaster as they contribute to economic growth.

Asia is more susceptible than any other parts of the world to natural disasters. The Interior Minister hoped the forum would foster tighter cooperation among Asian nations in preparation for natural disasters that are becoming more aggressive.

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center Chairman, Dr. Krasae Chanawongse claimed the event provides a platform for the government and the private sectors to share their thoughts.

He also hoped disasters in the past like a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan and disastrous floods in Thailand would motivate business entrepreneurs to find ways to make their businesses more resilient to such extreme adversity.

Just to be accurate, it is the 2015 report by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific that identified the Asia-Pacific area as the world’s most disaster prone region.
