NBTC told to keep cellular service fees low for consumers

BANGKOK, 22 April 2016 (NNT) - The NBTC Inspection and Evaluation Commission (NIEC) has criticized the telecommunications regulator's handling of issues surrounding mobile phone services.

NIEC commissioner Amornthep Jirattiticharoen said the NBTC, or National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, could have done more to keep mobile network fees lower and reclaim frequencies from state agencies.

Mr. Amornthep has advised the telecommunications regulator to inspect whether mobile network users are being overcharged. It should also find ways to make the mobile phone industry more competitive, in order to bring down costs.

As for the upcoming 900 MHz frequency auction, NIEC commissioner said the starting bid of 75.6 billion baht was too high to attract potential bidders.

Mr. Amornthep later said the winning bidder should also be required to reveal its pricing scheme down to the second instead of the minute to ensure fair trade.
