DPM affirms EC can draft necessary legislation without Cabinet review

BANGKOK, 27 April 2016 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister has affirmed that the Election Commission (EC) has the authority to propose draft legislation on the public referendum without seeking Cabinet review.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Kreau-ngam has remarked on the EC drafting 3 legislative proposals on the public referendum, saying he has yet to see the drafts and cannot give a direct opinion on them.

He nonetheless assured that the EC has the authority to create such drafts and is not required to first forward them to the Cabinet for review. He reminded that it is the EC’s duty to ensure the public is prepared for the referendum and that it is carried out without incident.

The deputy premier noted however, that the EC must be mindful of the National Council for Peace and Order’s regulations when drafting any legislation.

the EC must be mindful of the National Council for Peace and Order’s regulations when drafting any legislation.

And the best way to be mindfull is to forward any draft to the NCPO for implicit approval.

This is a Game of Thorns.
