Mahakarn Fort residents form guards to defend their community

BANGKOK: -- Residents of Mahakarn Fort community have formed sentries to guard their community against city officials as deadline for their stay has expired on April 30.

The residents have defied the City Hall’s eviction order and vowed to stay on until there is a ruling from the Central Administrative Court. So far, no city officials have turned up to carry out the forced eviction.

A petition was lodged with the Central Administrative Court by about 30 representatives of the community seeking a court’s injunction to put on hold the City Hall’s eviction order.

The petitioners claimed that former Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayothin had pledged to conserve the fort and develop the community.

They also demanded that another public forum be held to work out a compromise solution to their problem with the participation of city officials, academics, community representatives and the media.

If only the flower-sellers at Pak Klong Talat had resisted. It's a ghost town now.
