Chief of southern negotiating team confirms continuation of peace talks

BANGKOK, 5 May 2016 (NNT) – The chief of the southern peace negotiation team has denied rumors that talks have been suspended.

Gen. Aksara Kerdphol, who is in charge of the negotiating team seeking to restore peace in Thailand’s conflict-torn southern border region, said that his latest trip to the talks on April 27 had not ended with a decision to suspend the process.

Gen. Aksara confirmed that the negotiations will continue although it will take time while remaining within the policy framework of Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, which focuses on trust.

He insisted that the process had not hit a snag as some reporters and analysts had claimed after the transfer of Lt. Nakrob Boonthong, which Gen. Aksara said was part of a planned schedule.

He added that, during the latest meeting, there was only one issue that both sides could not agree on and it was the proposed setting up of a technical team to define the safe zone in the region in order to earn trust from the residents of the southern border area.
