Prestige Car’s Airbag Suddenly Explodes While Parked

car.jpg

PATTAYA: -- At 4pm on 8 May Pol Capt. Nakornrach Nonsrilad – Sub Inspector at Pattaya Police Station, Chonburi, was informed of the luxury car’s airbag suddenly inflating and causing the windscreen to shatter. However, the car was parked at the time in the K.T.T Regent Suite at Soi 12, Central Pattaya, and nobody was injured.

At the scene a silver Mercedes Benz with Bangkok license plates was discovered with a broken windscreen and with the inflated airbag inside. The hotel security guard informed police that the owner of the car had checked into the hotel at around midnight of 7th May and parked his car in the basement. The following afternoon he heard a muffled blast and raced into the car park to investigate.

The blast sound appeared to happen for no reason and so he informed the owner and the police were called.

Wonder if he had had an "electrical modifications" done...like adding on another/different alarm system, changing the stereo, adding a TV screen, just a whole bunch of different things some folks like to do to their vehicles. And with all the interface/feedback of vehicle wiring now days into various computers that control the vehicle, a modification can cause strange things to happen.

Benzes and bimmers has for long time now stopped being considered to be prestigious motoring,

there're so many of them running around mainly in base models and hire purchase now days,

the C class MB is now stand for 'Common'......

YAWN.... coffee1.gif

Looks like something on the dash flew up and hit the windscreen when the bag went off.

Like mobile phone battery auto-igniting in my pocket.. these stories are so rare, I have bigger concerns about driving (such as the idiot trying to cut me up at 100 kmh on the express way!).

Used as taxis in many developed countries...

As the report says, Mercedes has been contacted and will be very interested to investigate the case.

Something went terribly wrong here.

Unfortunately we will not get an update by the sensationalist PattayaONE.

In Thailand a Merc of any class is not for the "commoner".

A 2l engine car that you can hardly move 5 adults at a starting price of more than 2 mio Baht?

Upper middle class at least (double income teachers, doctors etc.).

Used as taxis in many developed countries...

True but E class preferred in Germany e.g. (where there this a flatt tariff whatever car is used).

First choice due to durability, reliability, service, quality overall.

This C class is assembled in Thailand.

Anyone wants to jump on that whistling.gif

Wonder if it had Takata airbags? smile.png

Looking at the photo it looks like passenger, driver and side curtains all went off. Doesn't make sense they could all go off at the same time without an impact.

I didn't know that:

The airbags in the vehicle are controlled by a central Airbag control unit[68] (ACU), a specific type of ECU.

My false assumption: independent sensor and controller/ignition.

I would join what @Pib writes in #3.

Erroneous works either in Merc workshop (big shame!) or at Somchai's super tune.

Do lizards bite on wires? smile.png

Hard to believe that an erroneous ACU, wrong wiring etc. left the factory.

Even when assembled in Thailand they will have strict quality assurance.

Hot temperature: no way! If they hadn't tested the electronics at extreme desert conditions it could cost them billions.

The sheik loves Merc.

I think you are wrong. If folk could afford to buy these rides they would, those who can do..smile.png

Wrong,Here in Asia it is the face thing. If a rumor was started that Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and other of the world's riches and movie actors were all buying Fords and Ford increased their cost up ten times then the wealthy of Asia would all be Ford drivers. Also on the real note there are a lot more better made cars out there made in Japan,America France, and The EU that out class Mercedes-Benz

Extremely possible. Check this out. http://www.nydailynews.com/autos/news/takata-airbag-recall-list-cars-article-1.2602999

Not related at all!

The TAKATA story is completely different.

It is about airbags being ignited correctly by the control unit (after a collision) and then "exploding" with dangerous shrapnel etc.

It's purely limited to the airbag construction/manufacturer as such.

As already described above: the airbags are controlled by a central control unit.

If all airbags blow simultaneously for no apparent reason then it's a terrible electronical? or SW? fault.

I do not remember a single report about such an incident (with Merc).

Benz and Beamers are still the "cars to have"

For those that can afford a little luxury in their

Lives and still enveyed by those who can't.

You obviously include Thai policemen as those who can "afford a little luxury in their lives".

Sorry but you are wrong. These airbags explode without warning and without being in an accident (collision). It is why they are being recalled.
