EU referendum: Boris Johnson criticises David Cameron’s Brexit claims

LONDON: -- Peace in Europe could be put at risk if Britain votes to leave the EU, David Cameron has warned.

With only six weeks to go before a referendum on whether the UK stays or leaves the bloc, the prime minister claimed on Monday the UK had always regretted turning its back on Europe in the past.

“Isolationism has never served this country well. Whenever we turn our back on Europe, sooner or later we come to regret it. But we’ve always had to go back in and always at a much higher cost……’‘If we stay, we know what we get – continued full access to a growing single market, including in energy, services and digital, together with the benefit of the huge trade deals in prospect, between the EU and the United States and other large markets. If we leave, it is genuinely a leap in the dark,’‘ Cameron said.

But Cameron’s conservative colleague and arguably his main rival in the Brexit debate, Boris Johnson, has dismissed such claims.

In a speech billed as his biggest on Europe yet, Johnson criticised the prime minister for failing to deliver proper EU reform.

“I don’t think the prime minister can seriously believe that leaving the EU would trigger war on the European continent, given that he was prepared, only a few months ago to urge people to vote leave if they failed to get a substantially reformed European Union. We have not got a substantially reformed European Union,’‘ Johnson said.

Latest polls suggest the final decision over the UK’s continued membership of the EU will be tight, with both the leave and remain campaigns neck and neck ahead of the June 23 vote.

Regarding the recent cheating by scruitineers etc in elections, i cannot see how the Brexit vote will win. There will be massive electoral manipulations on behalf of Cameron. How can it be avoided or can there be any appeal if necessary.

Brexit will not win...its already been decided...you dont actually think the UK and other so called "western democracies" are real do you ?....the plebs believe they have democracy..ie a vote which influnces decisions and elects people they want...they dont.

Cameron and the rest of them have already traded the UK for something with Brussels and even if 90% of the UK population said "out" it aint going to happen..

Rather silly comment. Britain is not so easily manipulated. I am [at this time] inclined to LEAVE. But I would prefer David Cameron any time to the opportunist Boris who is clearly more hell bent on his career than interested in telling the truth. It is going to be a close run event and I wonder if a result of say 51% to 49% will indeed be seen as vote that the PM can actually act upon. In any case Europe seems to teeter on the brink of self destruction without a decision on BREXIT. Interesting times !

Prize? What prize are you willing to pay for? You have to WIN a prize, but you'll certainly pay a price if the UK leaves the EU, for sure. Take a look at any of the serious journals on the subject such as The Economist, or try reading the FT. You and the other little Englanders will see the country's economy go into rapid decline from which it will never recover.

Spot on.

It's all smoke and mirrors... just like in the USA.

Cameron has clearly lost the plot.

If anyone will cause war in Europe it will be the EU itself.

Thankfully more and more Countries are now seeing this for themselves and telling the EU where to go.

Utter nonsense. Please read some 20th century history and go back from there.

The EU was and is a good idea. Close relations between countries, free market enterprise, etc etc, But it's been hi-jacked by the PC left, liberal socialists, who want to create a super state, a federal bureaucracy with controlled economies and everything dictated by those in Brussels and Strasbourg. They know full well that they'd never achieve this through elections as once the people twig what's going on they'd be out on their arse. So they seek to work around that by increasing the powers of the non elected bureaucrats that they put in place and decreasing the powers of national parliaments and elected representatives.

Saw an interview on the BBC earlier with the Chair of the German Foreign Policy Committee. Very clear where this member of Merkel's party stands. He talks about the need for compromise, shared responsibility and finding mutually acceptable solutions - providing everyone accepts the German solution to every problem like Merkel's enforced migrant quotas for all countries, or the German solution for Greece. Nothing remotely democratic.

Leaving the EU is not the solution unless all those that don't want to be part of a Federal German EU decide to leave and form their own union. And more and more seem to be getting aware of this and not accept it. UK, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Netherlands, the list keeps growing. Either stay, unite and force changes or leave and form your own union.

Sgt. Rock is quite correct, there will be war in Europe alright, Civil War! with unchecked migration (read invasion), EU ignoring the wishes of the people, i.e. recent Dutch referendum. Imposing 250000 Euro fine per immigrant, that a country refuses to accept.

God knows what else they are planning if Cameron gets his way.

Stop it in its tracks now and vote Leave.

The UK can be either a strong stand alone nation again or another sheep following their EU leaders Belgium,Germany and France.

Why not be the leading nation within EU? Too frightened that the Germans are better than you?

Could trigger a war. He will say anything as he is soon to be a failed politician and sees a job for him with the boys in Brussels. A democracy led by unelected officials..I am starting to find it all quite funny. I do think it is time to knock over the apple cart and leave the ever growing group.. i think the silly party changed their name and took over while i was not looking. If fear is the only reason to stay then i think the fear should be confronted ..war...come on , if you think you are hard enough. smile.png ps. I am lucky as it is a long way from my life . I do not rely on the Europeans or the British governments and I do prefer the corruption to be blatant.

Because the British people want out and have power again over their own affairs. Time to spend the 350 million pounds a week on British projects instead of propping up the sick basket cases of the EU
