We went there on holiday fifteen years ago, one week in the Seychelles and one in Mauritius. The Seychelles are much more visually attractive, Mauritius is a fairly bland round rock with sugar cane in the middle and some nice beaches on the perimeter. Over run with South African holiday makers we started to get island fever after a few days. It's hard to imagine living there unless you had family and/or a business but each to his/her own, boredom may prove to be the biggest obstacle.

Mauritius is not cheap because everything has to be shipped in, further you can only get a visa for a maximum of 180 days per year and you need to be able to show adequate USD for your stay

No it's not cheap at all - too far from everything & not sure about advanced medical care if needed. I love Mauritius & think it would be a great place to live for a while - but above my budget

Worked in Mauritius about 5 years ago and stay there 9 months. No, it is not cheap and much more expensive than Thailand. However, infrastructures (road, housing...) are very good, clean and well maintain. it's a paradise island with amazing beaches and lagoon, as well as nice places to visit in the center of the island (small mountains, waterfall...) but I found it very boring after a month there. Mostly attracting full packages tourists in beach resorts, all inclusives, tourists are transfer from Airport to the resort, enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner in the resort, private beaches and then back. Not much nightlife, especially if you compare to Thailand.
