BANGKOK: -- The media should play more active role in reducing risks from public disasters for public interests, said special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction Mr Robert Glasser through tele conference at a meeting held in Krabi province on Thursday.

The meeting, the 2nd media summit on climate change and disaster risk reduction, is jointly held in Krabi during May 12-14 between Thai PBS and Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union.

Food and Agriculture researcher Bo Damen told the meeting that the role of the media should be more than just news presentation but should educate the people and create an awareness among them about the problem.

Alan Dow, FAO’s Asia-Pacific communication officer, said most people seem to view climate change as just global warming, melting of polar ice caps and increasing of sea level.

He pointed out that climate change will also have immense impacts on global food production in a way that climate change may reduce food production while population is increasing especially in Asia-Pacific region.

The meeting also discussed the Sendai model which will be used as a framework in disaster risk reduction during the next 15 years.

They might like to, but run risk of harming Thailand's image and getting arrested. Do military coups qualify as "public disasters"?
