CARACAS: -- Opposition protesters have rallied in Caracas. Their calls to remove the Venezuelan president are taking on a more urgent tone.

It comes a day after the leader announced a state of emergency amid the ongoing economic crisis crippling the country.

Nicolas Maduro’s opponents warned that if he blocks a an attempt to hold a recall referendum there would be serious consequences.

Henrique Capriles, Opposition leader and Miranda State Governor speaking a the rally said, “Venezuela is a bomb that could explode at any moment. We don’t want the bomb to explode and, because of that, we call on everyone to mobilize in favour of a recall referendum in 2016.”

Pro-government supporters were also out in force as the president threatened to seize idled factories and jail their owners, while warning that trouble-makers were stoking violence to justify a foreign invasion.

“Next Saturday, I have called for the armed forces and militia to hold national military exercises to prepare us for any scenario because this land is sacred and we should make sure it is respected,” Maduro told throngs of supporters.

Venezuelans are facing an ever worsening economic crisis caused by low oil prices. Queueing for hours for food, power cuts and blackouts have become a part of daily life.

Maduro blames the US for the situation, and vows to cling on to power despite a recent poll that shows 70 per cent of the population want to see him leave.

Socialism in theory, like many things, is OK. In practice though it just encourages bludgers and gives too much power to the state. Venezuela is obviously a failed state, but have to wonder if the master of Sth American skullduggery and regime change was involved to nudge things along.

Hillary, Bernie Hugo Chavez and free everything, always works well until they run out of every one's money. Sounds like the socialists that were running Brazil have their own problems also. Take note EU, your not far behind either. And America you are at a pinnacle crossroads onto the same route to disaster, with the Democrats/socialist hoping also to lead us there.

You can be guaranteed that their elite (every country has them) are ensconced behind high walls guarded by tight security. They will have no problem get caviar and oysters and the best of food to eat. Capitalism has been fighting socialism since the days of the forming of the Fed and the rich divided up America as their own personal piggy bank. There is no happy medium both systems suck.

The truth is, in Venezuela there is no such thing as a Good President or a Bad One. Over their, you only have Presidents with high oil prices and low ones.

Venezuela is highly dependent on oil prices. Unlike Saudi Arabia there oil is not so cheap to take out of the ground. Especially due to the lack of exploration. They will not be able to satisfy there financial problems until the price of oil goes up. Way Up! They may get a new government but that won't change anything.

Thanks to Hugo not many of the big players want to invest their anymore and who can blame them. To make matters worst a lot of the big players who got kicked out have taken Venezuela to World Court and are winning there cases. Two large potential Gold and Copper Miners just won there cases and a muti-million dollar law suit which Venezuela will have to pay up or settle this a different way.

I assume you mean the US is nudging things along. Frankly, the Bolivistas need no help destroying a once beautiful country. They have done that very well on their own. I guarantee you, the elites in Venezuelan politics want for nothing. They are above the plebian masses. They cannot even get Chavez's daughters out of the presidential palace. They have refused to leave, and have made it very clear to Madurro that their would be consequences if he should attempt their removal.
