November 7, 200619 yr Maybe the wrong forum?. However at the end of the month it is time to go and renew my B visa. (Paperwork is NOT a problem). Ms C has expressed a desire to visit Penang - she being she. Me, I'd be off to Laos...... Anyone know the current price for the overnight train, sleeper, fan, (hate aircon) to Butterworth?. Thanks, Couthy PS. She doesn't want to fly - she works with aircraft and has never been on a choo choo. Edited November 7, 200619 yr by Couthy
November 7, 200619 yr Anyone know the current price for the overnight train, sleeper, fan, (hate aircon) to Butterworth?. The SRT only takes aircon coaches to Butterworth on the International Express. The majority of this train gets cut at Hat Yai. I don't recall whether there are any fan sleepers at all on the International Express.

Thanks for that ovenman - many years ago I used to go down to Penang on the choo-choo (twice actually) and yes the train changed at Hat Yai but you had a through ticket. And most certainly there were fan sleepers. Sod it- I'll nip down a railway station and ask them ; Just lazy me being bone idle!. Cheers, Couthy.

That's what I thought but I haven't been on this train for years so I wasn't 100% sure. I know that first-class (AC) service is only offered as far as Hat Yai.
November 7, 200619 yr Thanks for that ovenman - many years ago I used to go down to Penang on the choo-choo (twice actually) and yes the train changed at Hat Yai but you had a through ticket. The procedure may have changed since you last took the train. The same coaches travel all the way to Butterworth from Bangkok, they just leave the majority of the coaches in Hat Yai. The Thai International Express meets the Malaysian Langkawi Ekspres at the border in Padang Besar and they swap engines (i.e. the Thai engine stays in Thailand and the Malaysian engine in Malaysia). You can wind up killing a bit of time at the border if the other train is running late.
November 7, 200619 yr I'm sure this is more what she has in mind:Oriental express It doesn't stop in Penang long enough to obtain the new visa.
November 8, 200619 yr Author My thanks all: It has been a considerable time since I was on the train South. Oh well, back on an aircraft................. (Actually, I quite like Thai trains as well, nothing like the UK system!). Cheers, Couthy.
November 8, 200619 yr I went to B'worth in May. Quite slow, about 18 hrs from Hua Hin leaving HH about 7:30pm. Air con coaches About 45-min. wait at the border for immig stuff, change locomotive etc Arrives mid-day in B'worth. Avoid taxis at B'worth station they hassle you for $20-30 to take you across the bridge to Penang. Daytime part of the ride is very nice.
