British national who took part in protest detained in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A British national has been detained in Nepal for questioning about his involvement in anti-government protests by ethnic minority groups, a government official said Tuesday.

Home Ministry official Yadav Koirala said that if the man, identified as Martin Travers, 41, was found to have been involved in the protest then his visa would likely be revoked and he would be deported.

Travers was photographed at a rally near the prime minister's office wearing a red headband used by the protesters upset about a new constitution adopted last year. Koirala said Travers claimed he was forced to take part in the protest and if that was true he would be freed later Tuesday.

Hundreds of protesters from the Madhesi and other ethnic groups have been demonstrating since Sunday in Kathmandu, the capital. They have been gathered near the prime minister's office, blocking traffic and chanting anti-government slogans.

Earlier this month, a Canadian man was expelled from Nepal for writing a critical social media post against that the government said could disturb social harmony.

Nepal's constitution guarantees freedom of speech and it is rare for foreign citizens to be expelled from Nepal for criticizing the government.
