UNFPA calls for government to give more attention to family units

BANGKOK, 18 May 2016 (NNT) – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has called for greater care for the family unit by the government in Thailand in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

UNFPA Asia-Pacific Regional Office Director Yoriko Yusakawa has pointed out that as Thailand has joined other nations in aspiring towards the 2030 SDG, which focuses on ending inequality, the Thai government should pay more attention to social laws.

She explained that a survey conducted in 2015 showed Thailand has a diversity of family structures from extended to homosexual, thus public policy and laws should be responsive to all types of family units in the interest of vulnerable groups such as children and women.

She stated that care for children under the age of 2 should be improved and made more accessible while men should be encouraged to play a more active role in caring for their families.

UNFPA research over the past 26 years has shown that Thai family structures have changed significantly. At present, only 26.6 percent of families are considered traditionally structured with 16 percent single parent families.

Married couples without children have increased by 16 percent, speeding up Thailand’s shift to an elderly society. The fund has stated that without proper preparations by the government, such circumstances could prove problematic for the nation in the future.

"...greater care for the family..."

Difficult to do when one of the people responsible for creating the family situation runs away as soon as he hears "I think I'm pregnant". Just like like a driver after he causes a fatality. The first step for caring for a family is taking responsibility. No need to go any further.
