An immigration police officer was arrested on Saturday evening for allegedly conducting what authorities are calling a drunken shooting spree at a mango farm in Kandal’s Kampong Svay commune. Lieutenant Colonel Touch Enan, the Deputy Commander of Kandal Provincial Military Police, said the officer, 33-year-old Captain Leng Socheath, fired nine bullets into the air in an attempt to sober himself up after getting drunk at about 5:30pm on Saturday.

Residents of Kean Svay district’s Kampong Svay village who lived within earshot quickly alerted police to the disturbance. Mr. Socheath was arrested shortly afterwards. No one was injured in the shooting spree.

“He got drunk. In an effort to sober up, he fired nine bullets into the air, which panicked the people who lived nearby in the area,” Col. Enan told Khmer Times yesterday. “He was soon arrested by our district military police forces that were deployed there,” he added. “In this case, he is accused of conducting a shooting spree.”
