The alleged leader of a gang of robbers was arrested on Sunday afternoon in Phnom Penh’s Po Sen Chey district after being on the run for the past six years and allegedly responsible for nearly 40 armed robberies in Prey Veng and Svay Rieng provinces, according to police. Brigadier General Sreng Pov, the chief of Prey Veng provincial police, said 62-year-old Moeng Sary, also known as Krou Meng and a former teacher at Wat Prey Malou primary school in Prey Veng’s Kampong Trabek district, was charged by the prosecutor with “theft with aggravating circumstances and using a weapon without permission.”

“He was arrested after he escaped and was in hiding for about six years on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. He allegedly committed about 40 robberies,” he said. “He was arrested based on a Prey Veng Provincial Court’s warrant for his arrest.”

Brigadier General Pov added that after Mr. Sary’s arrest, he was sent from Phnom Penh to the provincial investigative judge for questioning in Prey Veng and has now been sent to prison to await trial. Prey Veng penal police officer Major Ly Bunrith, said between 2008 and 2011, Mr. Sary and five others allegedly committed 37 robberies in Prey Veng and Svay Rieng.
