Officials in Ranong brace for flashfloods following downpours

RANONG, 24 May 2016 (NNT) – The Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Ranong has urged local officials to be prepared in case of flooding as the province is being hammered by a storm.

Citing a report from the local weather station, Director of the Ranong Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Paradol Rungrojtheera said the southern province is currently under the influence of a powerful low-pressure trough in western Myanmar that was formerly Tropical Depression Roanu. The system is causing the southwesterly wind to intensify from now until May 26, bringing torrential rains and high waves.

The amount of rainfall accumulating over the past 24 hours in Mueang district has been recorded at 115.9 millimeters, which is considered very high.

As rains continue, disaster prevention officials of Ranong and Bang Rin Municipalities as well as all local administrative organizations have been instructed to keep an eye on areas at risk of flashfloods. Rescue teams are now prepared to give assistance to residents should they be affected by disasters.
