BANGKOK, 25 May 2016 (NNT) – Tuna industry business operators have joined with 4 European agencies to assure the international community of their sustainable and legal fishing practices.

President of the Thai Tuna Industry Association (TTIA) Chanin Chalisrapong has given his opinion that to achieve sustainable fishing, fishers must depend on scientific methods dictated by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization and the European Union’s Fisheries Commission while voicing agreement towards Thailand’s decision to cooperate with the European Commission on enhancing fish habitats.

The president said an urgent agenda of the state should be to push through the 65 laws needed under the 2015 Fisheries Act to protect against illegal fishing practices, to enforce tracking devices on fishing vessels and to implement Maximum Sustainable Yields (MSY) limits on fishermen.

Chanin noted that Thailand’s tuna industry continues to be the top exporter of tuna in the world and is likely to grow by 10 percent this year to a value of 85-90 billion baht. He urged all sides to work with the government in remedying illegal fishing practices and ensuring sustainable fishing.

I wonder who told this guy he had to get himself a media spot and blather nonsense. Noted was his proscriptively laying blame for non-action on the need for no fewer than 65 bills to be passed. What happened to the PM's ability to do all 65 in one fell stroke of his pen?

Does anyone have a link to what the EU did say?

Hm, smells fishy.

People with a vested interest in maximising fish catches and profits ought not to be the ones pretending sustainable practices, unless there is independent validation of their claims.
