UDON THANI: An Udon husband and wife team caught for selling Ya Ba said they bartered their wares for guns they had in their possession.

An "Aga" war weapon was exchanged for 20 pills and four M16 rounds were obtained for a pill each.

Nam Soam police in Udon province arrested Thongchan Phenwichian, 38, and his wife Ton-or, 31, after a sting operation at a hut in a cassava field on Thursday.

Acting on a tip off that people were selling Ya Ba officers pretended to buy 200 pills for 22,000 baht. Thongchan managed to escape but the wife spilled the beans. Two guns and the ammo were found hidden in a PVC pipe in the hut. She said they had been selling Ya Ba for a year.

The husband later gave himself up and the two were paraded for the press yesterday along with 365 pills, the guns and other evidence.

Thongchan said that he was a Ya Ba addict and had gone into rehab. After coming out a Laotian man had contacted him to persuade him to get into selling drugs. He received a consignment of 1000 pills for 20,000 baht on a pay later basis. He had got the war weapon in exchange for 20 pills and the bullets for one each.

He didn't know who the Laotian man was as contact was by phone and the drugs were left at a kilometer marker for pick up.

The husband and wife team were charged with possession of class one drugs with intent to sell and being in possession of a war weapon for which no license can be issued. They were detained.
