Another example of discriminatory practice against farangs

The rules are no secret; foreigners are not allowed on Thai military facilities.

Welcome to Thailand.

Wow that's strange becaise 2 years ago I worked on a Thai Army base in Bang su for 3 years. Guys if you don't know what the true information is, please refrain from posting. For the life of me, I don't understand why foreigners in Thailand have the need to argue about Thailand on a forum. Most of the members of Thai Visa live in Thailand so if you don't like the way it is, there are plenty of other countries to go. Just sayin!

I would respectively suggest most Thai Visa Forum members don't live in Thailand and continue to perpetuate the urban myths that have been told.

I once tried to turn my car around on the drive of an Army base in Sattahip. I was still outside.I didnt need to enter the base as the drive outside was wide enough to spin around in.The girl i was with explained that all we wanted to do was turn. All of a sudden there was 6 soldiers outside with rifles. The one who was in charge said that no foreigner was allowed anywhere near a military base.probably worried in case i saw how weak they were.

6 rifles and you thought they were weak??

Balls of steel Dave.

Ok, just how many "Googled" Phuket zoo, before going, to see if they would be allowed in, your comment is, to say the least, ridiculous, I would bet, even you, don't "Google" everything, and everywhere, and just in case you've gone off track, this is about the naval museum and I think you should look at its site, like most intelligent people would, please note, NO reference to foreigners. Stick that where the sun don't shine, sunshine.

http://www.navy.mi.th/navalmuseum/001_homepage/main_eng.htm

Common sense would come in handy here. Anybody expecting to be able to inspect a naval ship of his non native country should use his brains better.

Agree. This is so obvious...except to the truly ignorant. No foreigner would be able to waltz onto a US military base, let alone allowed on an American warship. Does the OP really need to have this explained to him?

You and stevenl obviously never visited an Australian Naval base, go back and read my comment regarding my thai wife, you two are such tossers, sprouting you own uninformed comments. Now, on the Thai site, NO mention of foreigners not being welcomed, only the ignorant would rant about something they do not understand, as I have also posted, recent visits from a US senator, and a Naval officer took place, now if anyone would be a "spy" they would be, or do you two tossers believe they were "frisked." Grow up kiddies, as others have stated, they have visited the museum, no problem.

So some are lucky, and you find that a reason to start insulting others.

The simplest of Google searches would have given you all the information you needed to visit the ship.

"HTMS Chakri Naruebet (เรือรบหลวงจักรีนฤเบศร) is an offshore Patrol Helicopter Carrier anchored at the Chuk Samet Deep Seaport. The king named the ship “Chakri Naruebet” meaning "Sovereign of the Chakri Dynasty". It was constructed in Spain in 1994. It is an 11-storey ship measuring 182 m in length and 30.5 m in width. It is equipped with modern weapons, as well as long-range surveillance radar. The important missions during wartime are the flagship of the fleet, controlling and commanding the fleet in the sea, as well as the aircraft carrier and air defence mission. It is open daily from 08:00-16:00. It is closed only on Wednesdays from 08:00-12:00. Admission free. International visitors seeking admission must write a letter to the Commander of the Royal Thai Fleet, Sattahip, Chonburi, 20180. For more information, Tel. +66 38 438 547-62 ext. HTMS Chakri Naruebet."

I think it really is a case of inadequate prior planning and preparation.

Outrageous, information being hidden on the internet in that way!

Actually their double pricing is against their own constitution which states that all people, regardless of race, are treated equally. Be a brave farang that tried to sue though! Count me out as I live here!

A Thai lawyer told me this btw.

I believe it's time for some Thai SJWs laugh.png

The constitution of any country , pertains to the laws that govern the citizens of that country, not foreigners. Obviously foreigners are are treated under a different set of rules, thats why foreigners need visas, have labor restrictions, national security restrictions etc etc.

Oh come on grow up man. There are much worse discrimination in European countries and even USA than Thailand. In Venice tourist have to pay 16 Euro for a bus ride while residence pay 1 Euro. In every restaurant they have two types of menu one is Menu De Touristo which is menu for the tourist and one for local. What you pay is almost double or 3 times more than the local people. And on top of that people behave like a shit with the tourists.

I don't know when farang are going to stop crying for paying few dollar more than the Thai people. You don't understand you living in a such cheap country, enjoying all the infrastructure that Thai government have made by taking tax from their people etc. Now you cry for living there so well and enjoying you life with lots of wonderful people around you and still cry why I pay 3 dollar more.

In a similar vein I spoke to a farang who had driven his family from up country to attend his brother in laws ashes scattering ceremony, from a boat setting out from the Navy Sattahip base.He was not allowed in. If the navy was that worried about a farang being a spy why not have a guard accompany him on and off the base? Show a bit of compassion and common sense.

I am confused I was at the base in Sattahip to attend the ash ceremony.. It was about 2-3 years ago...

We also were scared, that I am maybe was not allowed because of Navi base... but there were no problems at all.... Also on the ship there seems never to be a problem at all...

So maybe I was lucky.... But If I could not go inside.. yes would be angry on the one side.. but also would understand that this can happen....

I have also been on the Carrier, and an ashes scattering ceremony but escorted by a family member of high navy rank. But was refused entry to the Carrier on Children's Day and waited on the quay with a beer. My Thai wife applied for permission for me for entry onto the navy base to watch my Grandson sailing there. It was granted at that time.

You missed this:

Once they know who you are and the purpose of your intended visit they may well oblige. It just takes more effort than most would be prepared to make.

Perhaps but it's still worthy of note that foreigners are discouraged from visiting. In most countries where naval visits are allowed to the public there's no suggestion foreigners need to apply for special permission. If it was a question of national security of protecting innovative technology (there is none) that would be another matter. In any case the vessel concerned is a piece of junk with no real protection in time of war.It hardly ever has left Sattahip since its purchase for $ 340 million in 1994 - essentially money down the bog.Luckily the Thai defence establishment is not designed to protect the country on time of war; it has a series of quite different objectives which are beyond the relevance of this thread.

I did enjoy the reference to command and control at time of war - so comically detached from reality.

I can guarantee you that most foreigners who work here are paying more tax than Somchai. Therefore some of us would like to see some equal treatment as we also contribute to the government's turnover... Although I'm not sure if this specific case warrants equal treatment...

Who cares? It is such a small thing. Just suck it up, and move on. That is what real men do. Repeat to yourself one hundred times: Water off a duck's back. Water off a duck's back.

More than likely, they were embarrassed for you to see an older boat, that is a generation away from being state of the art.

Right on. True words indeed. It is so easy to cry, complain, and moan about the low status we are reduced to here. But, the reality is that most of us live quite well here. Those of us with some cash live an enviable lifestyle. And at least for me, most of the Thai people I encounter are kind and helpful. Unlike many places, I encounter very few people who are uncooperative or hostile to foreigners. Of course, I live in a smaller town, one may not be able to say this about Pattaya, for instance.

Just man up. Deal with what you have. Move on. It is not a big deal at all. Water off a duck's back.
