PHNOM PENH: -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has proposed Malaysia to accept more Cambodian workers, especially domestic maids, “with a good salary and good working conditions”, The Phnom Penh Post reported on Monday.

The request was made by Mr Hun Sen to his Malaysian counterpart during the former’s official visit to Malaysia last week.

On his Facebook page on Friday, Hun Sen wrote: “I suggested to Prime Minister (Najib Razak) that he be open to receiving more Cambodian workers, to provide work for them, with a good salary and with good working conditions”.

Malaysian media reported that Prime Minister Najob Razak embraced Mr Hun Sen’s request, particularly house maids.

Cambodia lifted ban on maids migrating to Malaysia last year and a memorandum of understanding was signed last December between the two countries regarding Cambodian workers employed in Malaysia but details of the MoU are yet to be finalized.

Labour Ministry’s spokesman Heng Sour said that the MoU would give future maids legal recourse against abuses maids suffered in Malaysia in the past.

There are currently about 30,000 Cambodians working in Malaysia, mostly as unskilled workers.

Meanwhile, Moeun Tola, executive director of labour rights group Central, said he felt “ashamed” of Mr Hun Sen’s comment. He said that the Cambodian prime minister should think about creating jobs or creating opportunities in the country for the people, not asking a foreign government to recruit labour from Cambodia.
