People line up to register for free test run tickets for the Purple Line on Sunday at MRT Khlong Bang Phai in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — It was a less than impressive start for the MRT Purple Line when thousands of Bangkokians lined for 15,000 tickets to take a test ride.

The extension, which has been criticized as inconvenient because it won’t connect to the existing Blue Line when it opens Aug. 6, proved frustrating on the first day tickets were distributed with people complaining of poor management.

"Bangkokians"?

I'm sure there was a lot of that going on is such crowded conditions.

Haha they would queue up for free anything

I don't get it, it's a free testride untill august so why do we need tickets at all?

Maybe someone in authority will blame the Burmese!! Well they get blamed for most things.

To test the ticket system?

I guess you can't ride without having a ticket....

I find your comment insulting.

You need such a chip to get thru the gates.

They almost make it sound like that was coming at a surprise. Well, to them it actually may have been.

For the rest of us....saw that one coming from a mile away. It's not like we can see the "oh that comes at a surprise!" reaction every year with the (hint hint) yearly flood/drought situation. So yea, where's the news?!

No. They can lock the doors open. Maybe they haven't thought of that. Too simple.

Bloody hell a free skytrain ride! like rats squabbling for the cheese... wow a free ride to nowehere

In Singapore last December, a couple of weeks before the official opening, they let everyone ride for free on a Saturday on the Downtown Line extension. No tickets required, free handouts and entertainment. Thousands of people went and it was all well managed.

So say there will be FREE buses to the MRT at Bang Sue.......

Problem as I see it, end station Bang Yai, here the Population has far more than doubled in the the area in last few years. hope there will be a purple line train every 2 min.. + 100's of Free buses the other end..

Yesterday was again at the Red Cross Hospital in BKK, driving home took 3 hours of stop start... so yes cannot wait for the Purple Line to open.. as only 15 km to Bang Yai end station.

On a + note since the start of building the purple line house price have more than doubled even 15 km away. and still rising, houses nearer to Bank Yai are 3 or 4 times the price they were 12 years ago.

You mean the same farang who can't understand the difference between a visa and an extension of stay? I don't think Mensa has a large number of farang members in Thailand.
