I went to Tesco Lotus (Kamthieng) off the super highway in the north part of Chiang Mai to return some videos. I went at the time they usually have aerobics in the parking lot. With all the people there doing aerobics, all the secure motorcycle parking spaces were taken. So I parked at the front of the parking lot by the front door. I was in for 5 minutes and when I returned my helmet was stolen.

When I complained to Tesco management for not having enough security to protect its customers they said they were very sorry. When I asked them to replace the helmet they said again, they were very sorry, but could not give me a new helmet. I really didn't expect them to give me one, I just wanted to see what they would say.

I like Tesco but they need better security in the parking lot.

The message from Tesco is: "Thank you for shopping at Tesco. We appreciate your business; however, if something happens to your property while it is on our property, then it is not our fault."

So if your shopping at Tesco, watch your stuff, because they are not and the thieves know this.

Out of the no doubt hundreds of helmets on the many motos, was there something special about yours that may have caused it to be the lucky one picked, or was it just another Thai type helmet??

Sorry to say it, but there's not much recourse if you aren't in the parking area for bikes. Perhaps next time you should not leave anything with the bike.

Wherever you are from would you expect the local supermarket to compensate you for losses incurred by your own sillyness in leaving your private property sitting on your motorcycle or car?

Get real.

A most interesting post all the same. Great to see the standard is being maintained. :D

in the case of your lost helmet ..

i think is your respondsibility to look after your Helmet ..

i don't assume you will leave your wallet on your bike expose ..

same apply to your helmet ..

since is leave un-guarded or not lock onto your bike i assume ..

i think there is only the one who took your helmet and yourself to be blame ..

.

if you had taken care of your helmet . or lock it up on your bike or got a box for your helmet .

you might not had lost it .

if you wanna lt someone take care of your belonging ..

then is your responsibility to ensure . is taken care rightfully ..

you may wanna try carrying your helmet and leaving it with the guard . and on your trip out ,take it from him ..

.

oh i used a old ugly helmet .. the best anti - thief on the market ..

Why would you leave an unlocked anything on your motorcycle in a public venue anywhere?

It's pretty minging to steal someone's old bike helemet. Mine reaks of stale sweat - and a new one can cost upwards of 150 baht.

Where is the black market for bike helmets here?

Cambodia ....... but they usually take the bike too.

It has nothing to do with Tesco/Lotus, the chaps with 'Security' written on their shirts (and probably an impressive display of medal ribbons) do one thing...... collect the little plastic entrance card.

Personal belongings are not their problem.

Pretty sure you would have gotten the same response from management just about anywhere, not just Tesco Lotus. How could security keep an eye on a helmet anyway? No one to really blame but yourself.

Thanks for the post though...i'm going to start remembering to secure my helmet to my bike more often...though I feel more comfortable leaving my helmet in the basket or hanging on the mirror in Chiang Mai than I would in the States.

I'm not sure how relevant this is to you but if you shop at Tesco. You should all read this.

I am posting this to warn of something that happened to me. I have become a victim of a clever scam while out shopping at Tesco, and it could happen to you.

Here's how the scam works:

Two seriously good-looking 18-year-old girls approach your car as you are packing your shopping in the boot. They both start wiping your windscreen with a rag and window clean, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy t-shirts. It is impossible not to look.

When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' and instead ask you for a ride to another Tesco. You agree and they get in the back seat. On the way, they start having sex with each other. :D Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and performs on you, while the other one steals your wallet. :D

I had my wallet stolen last Tuesday, Wednesday, twice on Thursday, again on Saturday, yesterday and probably tonight. :D:o:D

You're not having a lot of luck with your motorcycling related endeavours (or experiences) here in the realm Richard.

First you adopted the Thai approach to riding i.e. screw the road traffic rules and you end up in CM Ram hospital (I am pleased to see that you seem to have a made a good recovery) Then you ignore one of the cardinal rules of common sense i.e. leaving your belongings unsecured and then still expect them to be there when you return.

You might also have missed the signs that almost all of the supermarkets have in their car parks warning that the proprietor would not be held responsible for any damage to your vehicle nor for the loss of any property left with the vehicle.

I hope that it wasn't an Arai or a Shoei

I hope that you don't experience a third event "it could be serious"

i seldom wear a helmet and when i do , the helmet look worst state then my bike..

and soemthing cross my mind ..

some years ago .. maybe 2 maybe 3 - i park my bike at . KSK ( KAD SUAN KAEW ) The one with Vista and central .

I forget my KEy . and i leave it on the bike .. along with my Helmet ..

i went to watch a movie , enjoy a nice japanese meal . and shop for some hour ..

i est no less then 5 hour ..

after that when i am back .. my bike was move toward the side .. as i park it lousy

and the best park is . everything is there ..

i did not even recall leaving the key on my bike and someone had move it a few time . so it shift to the very side on ( some thai will shift your bike in order to park their bike )

so .. my answer for this is ..

Even if a thief saw my bike .. he is not dumb enough to steal it .. cos he would figure . repairing it would cost him more time .. and on the process of stealing someone spot him ..

Next time go to a French supermarket (Carrefour or Big C).

well Tesco arent going to confront their security company for your helmet. Anyone remember what happened when they tried to change security companies in Bangkok a few years ago? (or Carrefour - cant remember, same thing!)

The owner's of the outgoing company - who was formerly high up in the police or army - organised a number of bombs at different locations. It was definitely Lotus.

Its pretty simple. Dont leave property unattended anywhere! Be it Thailand, UK, USA, Cambodia, Spain, Italy..........

I know many Thais leave their helmets with their bikes, but I guess yuo were pretty unlucky.

I had this happen in Kanchanaburi last year. I had to buy the rental place a new helmet. Sh!t happens.

Tesco security aren't to blame though, they merely ensure that every car that leaves the car park has a plastic pass, thus making it more difficult for someone to steal a car.
