Prime Minister Hun Sen has blasted the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) for protecting acting president Kem Sokha, who has failed to appear at a number of court hearings, leading to a political stalemate. On Sunday, Mr. Sokha declared he had no intention of backing down over the current political stand-off and told a group of supporters that the CNRP would succeed in the upcoming elections and lead Cambodia towards peace, democracy and national reconciliation in the future.

Mr. Hun Sen indirectly lashed out during a ceremony yesterday, but refused to name Mr. Sokha, accusing opposition members of protecting people who broke the law. “Someone was doing something illegal and he asked a group of people to protect him and those people protected him against the law. This is a concern that needs to be addressed,” he said.

The premier added that if the opposition can claim to be able to win the upcoming elections, their cries of a political crises would be for naught. “They said the political problem is now fine and they still can win. Then just stay there if you think it’s convenient,” he said.
