Centre to suppress UEFA Euro 2016 soccer betting now in action



BANGKOK: -- The Royal Thai Police today announced the opening of the centre to suppress football betting as the UEFA Euro 2016 is scheduled to kick off June 10 - July 10.

Royal Thai Police deputy commissioner Pol Gen Chalermkiat Srivorakan said the centre will be headed by deputy commissioner Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen.

The centre is assigned to not only suppress online soccer betting, but also to educate the people about the harm that gambling will incur on those addicted to it and their families.

The centre will be tasked with in-depth inquiry into soccer betting in order to root out major players, operators and financiers, he said.

He said if investigation links any of them to international gambling network, the police will expand further investigation and will also enforce anti-money laundering law to impound and confiscate their assets.

Another deputy commissioner Pol Gen Vinai Thongsong said further that target areas of suppression will be in big cities such as Chiang Mai, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani as police have information that there are major gambling operators there.

He said today’s soccer betting has changed so much from just betting on voice call from mobile phones to now online betting.

This change prompted the Royal Thai Police to seek cooperation from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to block all soccer betting websites and arrest all webmaster for trials, he said.

Phew! I've been so worried leading up to the EUROS. The thought of grown men and women using money to gamble on whether one team will win, lose or draw has given me sleepless nights. The fewer people doing this the safer I'll feel. Right, I'm off to gamble my life on the roads.

Yet more stupidity in a land already overburdened with it.
