I own a mitsubisi l200, I realy like the truck apart from the manual gearbox, I have enquired about changing it over to auto, I have been given a quoat for 40.000 bht problem is the man doing it cannot give a garentee that it will work after, I know what he means having done some manual to auto conversions myself back in Europe, they can be working perfectly till you disturb the tourq converter and dislodge some sludge then it's straight to your valve body, anyway knowing the problems I would still like to go auto, sure I could change the truck for an auto that would be the most sensable thing to do but I like this one, and if we all done the most sensable thing all the time there wouldent be any need for this forum then were would we be ? so my question is this, does anybody know somewhere that has done a manual to automatic gearbox exchange ?

pop3 - they can be working perfectly till you disturb the tourq converter and dislodge some sludge then it's straight to your valve body, :o I must admit you have tickled my imagination with the torque converter - sludge to the valve body- did you consider that prior to installing give all parts a good clean which includes servicing the obviously secondhand auto - which includes dropping the sump plate cleaning all filters/screens or replacing etrc etc. :D

Remembering when going from manual to auto or vice versa there are numerous little tid bits to accomodate not the least being different differential ratios (change over diff centers) this more often than not requires modification of the tailshaft (length). :D

All the best in you quest.

Thanks for your reply mijan24, yeah its not for the faint hearted all this gearbox stuff ! The gearbox I changed over years ago was an old borg warner35, long time ago but surley I cleaned the filter inside the pan ? if I diddent ooops ! don't tell anyone, Thing is, is it possible to clean inside the tourq converter ? I have always been told no, if that is the case even cleaning the filter in the pan won't help if its going to get all the particles ( sludge ) as I like to call the stuff back in there from the converter again, I have wonderd about the diff's, is auto lower or higher ratio ?

A coworker of mine did this recently and had a ton of problems. I would really think this one through before making a change like that. The only advantage of an auto gearbox is in traffic jams.

The 40,000 looks to be a tad on the expensive side, especially if it comes without any warranty!

One thing the mechanics are famous for over here in Thailand is changing the complete engine/gearbox combo. The most popular one being the 2JZ Toyota engines.

I know of several slightly older pick-up owners (old pick-ups that is :o ) who did the complete changeover and added an LPG installation on top of it!

They end up with a very smooth vehicle, lots of power, comfortable automatic gearbox, and they drive at less then half the money per kilometer (LPG sells at 9,85 Bahtr/liter) compared to their old chuggy diesel engine!

Total cost including the LPG conversion comes in at a tad over 70,000 Baht (40,000 for engine/gearbox, 15,000 installation and 15,000-20,000 for the LPG)

If you don't have LPG in your area, the fuel engines are not going to burn a lot more fuel (even less) unless you drive like a rally pilot :D Total conversion would not be much more then what they quoted you for the auto box, and it'll be a whole lot more trouble free since engine and gearbox were designed for each other in the first place!

It really seems to be a complete waste of time....just swap it for an auto and be done with it....9or go to a breakers and get a complete engine g/box unit.
