PHNOM PENH: -- The former chief of the notorious S-21 prison on Wednesday told the court how he helped spare the lives of four inmates when he swapped painkillers for poison which was supposed to be given to the prisoners at the order of his superior, according to The Phnom Penh Post Online on Thursday.

Kaing Guek Eav who is better known under the nomme de guerre “Duch” told the court that the poison pills were discovered in the house of an “enemy” interrogated at S-21 who confessed under torture to a plot to kill or poison Khmer Rouge cadre.

Duch said he threw out the tablets and ground up parasetamol, then funneled it into the empty capsules and gave them to the inmates. “In fact, I changed the powder so it was not poisonous,” he claimed.

Duch returned to the courtroom on Wednesday to answer questions about the Toul Sleng prison where more than 12,000 prisoners were imprisoned and later executed.

The prosecution confronted Duch with list of heavily pregnant women who were sent from the rice fields at Prey Sar to the killing fields of Cheoung Ek, as well as a series of faded photographs depicting an entire family who were arrested and detained at S-21.

When questioned whether Son Sen and later Nuon Chea condoned or condemned the killing of children, Duc responded: “There was never an instruction not to kill children, not to kill pregnant women.”
