PRACHINBURI: -- A two year old boy in the care of his grandparents died after he drowned in a pond behind the house.

The grandfather of the child had picked him up from pre-school yesterday afternoon and was helping his wife do some cooking.

After just ten minutes the boy was nowhere to be found and they called out to him reported Thairath. A frantic search began and the grandfather saw that some grass was disturbed by a large pond. He jumped in and found the 2 year 6 month boy in the pond.

CPR was given but the little one was already dead.

Prajinburi police and medics were called to the house in Nern Horm sub district and saw the boy laid out on a table in front of the house. The boy’s distraught mother and father and other relatives who had arrived were all crying in a heart wrenching scene.

Police saw that the pond was 15 metres wide by 30 metres long and had a depth over head height. The 47 year old grandfather had picked the boy up from school and told police that he was helping his wife prepare food for ten minutes when they found that their grandson had gone missing.

" A two year old boy in the care of his grandparents died after he drowned in a pond behind the house."

I see two year olds walking in the middle of roads every day while their mothers are talking with someone, and not aware of what is happening until they hear a horn blow from a car or motorbike that doesn't even slow down. How about children on the lap of a passenger in the front seat of the car? 12 people riding in the back of a pick up truck? More than on child standing up on a motorbike, one being held by the driver and one being held by the passenger? Not to mention a scene in front of every school...4 underage kids on one motorbike, none of them wearing a helmet.

Safety is a joke here. Life must be cheap because no one seems to do anything to prevent those lives from meeting an early demise. Where I live, there are signs hung up all over town illustrating a motorbike driver wearing a helmet with the phrase: 100% helmets in (Name of town). When you look around, there are no more than 10% of the drivers wearing helmets.

Not sure why they write these articles. It's not like anyone is going to read them and say: "I really need to get serious about ensuring the safety of my children"

Tragic to all.

Rip little one.

....how senseless....

Very sad, children die in ponds all over the world.

Just one of those things that can't be helped.

<deleted>. This can be prevented.

I don't agree. A bit of common sense would reduce the numbers a fair bit.

Poor little lad, 2 years old and feckless parents/family. Never had a fair chance.

A fence? Oh no, too much money, who in the world is thinking about a fence???

Why not leave the kid alone, it has eyes in its head.

Small children can drown in a bucket of water. Supposedly happens 20 times a year in the US. They need constant supervision. A tragedy.

If you need to start getting serious about the safety of your children..

You should stop blaming Thailand for every incident that happens here..

I'm sure, some young kid drowned, unsupervised, somewhere in the western world - recently.

So..

You see 2 year olds walking in the middle of the road everyday, and do nothing?

Didn't you see at least 12 times... A gang of 4 or 5 Thais, beating up drunk defenseless farangs and just watch as well?

Or was that another loser?

I knew, this would be coming!

Sick comment!

Oh, for pity's sake. That's like saying we should all stop blaming Thais for what Thais do.

Hardly sensible now, is it?

Though I don't the specifics of this pond, it is common to dig ponds all over the country wherever and whenever to sell the soil. These ponds are often near houses and villages and for the most part the ponds are dug straight down with little or no slope. When a non swimmer or child falls in it is hard to get out. Also the lack of slope results in soil collapsing on the edges and presents a trap waiting to happen. And as noted previously, without fencing.

A little common sense could sure go a long way in reducing the number of these tragedies.

RIP little fellow.
