WHO praises Thailand’s elimination of mother to child HIV transmission

BANGKOK, 10 June 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister is happy that the World Health Organization’s has praised Thailand’s success in eliminating mother to child HIV transmissions in the Kingdom, adding that governmental strength has been efficiently managing this issue, according to a spokesman.


Government Spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd has revealed that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha was happy to hear of WHO’s praise of Thailand’s remarkable success on its complete elimination of mother to child HIV transmission. Such a national achievement is considered the first in Asia, and second on the global level. The only other nation able to achieve this goal is Cuba.

The PM thanked all related officials and agencies, especially the Ministry of Public Health, to the Kingdom's success in ending transmission of HIV and syphilis viruses from mother to child. The number of transmission has gradually declined from 1,000 cases in 2000, down to 85 cases in 2015.

The government spokesman further elaborated that the government has extended screening procedures and free treatment offers to all HIV-positive pregnant women which covers the community level healthcare system, providing blood test services to all antenatal care recipients, and will be supplying anti-HIV medicine to individuals tested as HIV-positive.

He said the government and the Thai public should ensure the sustainability of this success, assured through strong government policies and efficient management, adding that an effective citizen-state cooperative approach will be able to solve any issue.
