NLA approves nomination of new AMLO Secretary-General

BANGKOK, 17 June 2016 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly has approved the nomination of a new Secretary-General of the Anti-Money Laundering Office.

At the NLA sitting on Thursday, members of the legislature held a secret ballot, in which 154 votes were cast in favor of the nomination of Pol. Gen. Chaiya Siriumphankul as the new chief of the AMLO, with two votes against and three abstentions.

The deliberation on the nomination was needed after AMLO Secretary-General Pol. Col. Seehanat Prayoonrat had completed his term in office while the new selection process had not been set up.

As the new process will likely take some time, Chief of the National Council for Peace and Order Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha issued an order on May 17 to appoint Pol. Gen. Chaiya as acting Secretary-General while waiting for the NLA to verify his background before confirming its approval of the nomination.
