Thailand's telecoms regulator, c. bank join forces to boost cyber security

Thailand's telecoms regulator and central bank said on Friday they had agreed steps to improve cyber security for electronic transactions via mobile phones as the country pursues a goal to become a cashless society.

A finger print scan will be among the measures to be introduced to protect mobile users from scams, and it should be ready for service in December, Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the regulator, told a news conference.

The regulator National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission will also examine the service fees that telecoms operators charge customers to ensure fair treatment, he said.

Thailand has about 10 million mobile banking users out of the 67 million population and the number is expected to rise after a strong growth of average 73 percent annually in the past 5 years, Bank of Thailand Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob said.

I went to the dentist last week and after he took an x-ray I was asked for my passport. I was told that all dental x-rays for foreigners must now be sent to the government along with their I'D. Now this sounds like the government will also have the fingerprints of everyone that has a bank account. And if the country goes cashless, that will mean everybody. Interesting.

And opn top of this it is not the actual MOBILES that you must feel safe with, what about where the banks STORE this information? Thailand ranks VERY VERY UNSAFE in this area

I was wondering, if the country were to become cashless then how would tourists pay for such things as a bus ride, 10 baht, or some food from a stall, 20 baht, or some trinket from the market 50 baht because each time they use their card they would have to pay a charge and a exchange rate charge. Pop into 7/11 for a coke and end up with also sorts of additional bank charges making a 12 baht bottle of coke into what, 150 baht.

What about all those Thais who have no bank account? How will pay for stuff? Thousands of hill tribe people and refugees who have no bank account or Thai I.D. card?

Letting the banks and big companies control all your money is asking for trouble in the future. Being cashless makes one very vulnerable. If this plan actually sees daylight then the people are doomed. This country is still basically a third world country which is subject to the whims of the elite/military. So any dissent would be crushed by simply freezing bank accounts. Cashless means total control by the state, you are no longer a person just an expendable number.
