Suu Kyi asks Myanmar migrant workers to be loyal to their employers

BANGKOK: -- Myanmar State Counselor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi urged Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand to behave as if they are guests here, be loyal to and communicate with their employers.

Addressing a select group of about 500 migrant workers at Thalay Thai market in Samut Sakhon province Thursday, she said it was normal for petty problems to occur between workers and their employers and urged both sides to solve the problems in a peaceful manner.

She added that if both Thailand and Myanmar join hand-in-hand in development and understand each other, all the problems can be overcome.

Ms Suu Kyi told the audience that she would like to see migrant workers to work legally in Thailand and she promised to press for the quicker issuance of certificates of identification (CI) for the workers so that they can live, work and travel legally in Thailand.

Questioned by the workers about why they need health security cards and alien certificates and why passport charges are different, she stressed the importance of alien certificates and health cards.

As for the different passport charges, she suggested that the problem might stem from the brokers who charge different rates. She then asked the Burmese labour minister who accompanied her in the trip to explain to the workers.

My God, what a let-down! 'Be nice to your marvellous Thai masters; be loyal and obedient to them; don't get uppity - just remember that you are docile and exploitable slaves here - know your place'! I wonder if this report is another instance of the Thais putting words into a foreign dignitary's mouth. If not - I would feel terribly abandoned and let down if I were a Burmese slave, sorry worker, here!

Behave and don't lose your jobs as you won't be able to send money home to benefit the country.

I wonder if she has or will raise the situation of her countrymen convicted of the Koh Tau murders.

very, very disappointing just when you start to 'believe' it looks like she turns out to be a paper tiger

Maybe she's being diplomatic and all problems can be overcome in time means you will just have to wait for a legitimate democratic to be elected because we ain't going to get any sympathy from this lot.

God she looks old now. A photo of her on the day of her release 2010. Six years has taken it's toll.

This woman is one of the biggest disappointments ever!

Be good to your masters,if only the masters showed them some respect ,instead

of renewable working fodder, but the tables will turn,Burma slowly opening up,has

the chance to be top tourist destination, and when all the Burmese return to work

in their own country,Thailand will be in deep shit.

...she is an absolute disappointment...she is nothing but a paper tiger......"be loyal to your Thai employers"...yea right.......Burmese workers are treated like pieces of dogsh*t by there Thai bosses......abused...beaten....short changed with there salaries.....told where to live...(in inferior tin sheet camps)......not allowed mobile phones in some cases....etc etc

This woman is one of the biggest disappointments ever!

When the video footage emerged of Buddhists, including monks, attacking Moslems she was asked to comment and said she couldn't as she didn't know enough about it.

For someone supposedly with her finger on the country's pulse she became a total politician and decided not to upset her power base.

She went down dramatically in my opinion at the time as even a simple call for calm would have been appropriate.

The whole world was behind her, when she had her rights taken away!

You should assume, she would be the Champion of the Rightless, now that she is free and can -more or less- do, what she wants!

But she is killing her own heritage on a daily basis!

It is a bit like "The Dark Knight": You either die a hero, or you live long enough, to see yourself become the villain!

For all the complainers.....what is she suppose to tell her fellow workers in Thailand? Go home? Myanmar does not have enough jobs to support these workers. There won't be for another 10 years or so. Go beat up your employers for better pay? hold the factory hostage like what workers in Vietnam do?

come'on guys.... she already said the right things ...its just the tone she said it in does not give burmese workers a moral boost

People are bashing her for the "loyal" comment. The reason why she said that is because the number 1 complaint among employers is that, myanmar workers only work a couple month before moving on to the next factory. Its understandable why they move jobs, they want to make more money, so whenever a factory does not have overtime work, they immediately look for one that does. So believe it or not, these workers want to work overtime in order to make more to send home. Many workers especially ones that are located around or in Industrial Estate are being paid a lot higher than minimum wage as there is a shortage of workers.

Suu Kyi asks Myanmar migrant workers to be loyal to their employers

Well, she's certainly proving her loyalty to her new bosses. Hands up all those who believe the Rohingya (the use of whose name has been banned by Suu Kyi) will be on the agenda for discussions with the Thai military leadership.

After all the fight she been through she now has become another puppet

I concur I truly had a lot of respect for this lady till now. To bad she did not look into a minimum livable wage for the Burmese workers working in Burma. If that happened maybe some would go home to stay and work and share in the new found prosperity. It seems once they are in a position of power it goes to their head and others are beneath them what a shame. There are migrant slaves all over the planet especially in the Arab countries. Use and abuse seems to be the order of the day.
