BANGKOK: The army commander-in-chief has expressed condolence for the death of a corporal who collapsed from heat stroke while undergoing drill at an army camp in Kanchanaburi in mid-June, army spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree said Friday.

Corporal Panya Ngernrian was ordered by his drill master to run five laps around the camp as part of the daily exercise. But after having run three laps, he collapsed apparent from heat stroke and later sent to the camp’s hospital for treatment. However, his condition did not improve and was transferred to Phra Mongkut hospital where he was hospitalized for 12 days before he died on Wednesday.

Colonel Winthai insisted that the victim had not been abused by his drill master. He said that the drill master did not expect the victim would collapse because he was still young.

He said the army commander-in-chief, General Thirachai Narkvanich had ordered all army units, especially the medics, to step up medical checkups for conscripts and personnel undergoing training to prevent a repeat of such a tragedy.

The news yesterday said that after he collapsed in the third round, he was forced to get up and run again. He then collapsed trying to complete the fourth. This spokesman says that while on a routine drill, he collapsed and was rushed to hospital where he died.

Don't expect to hear anything other than "not our fault", "it's called covering your arse.

Well if Drill Master had proper training and a brain He would have seen if it was hot out and runner not given water and rest he might run into a problem. But being a military Hiso and feeling all powerful he chose to be slave master costing a young man his life.

Whilst it is good to see that the Thai military have at least acknowledged Corporal Panya's unfortunate (and, most probably avoidable) death, the CIC's order to "... step up medical check-ups for conscripts and personnel undergoing training ...", does not go to the root cause of this type of incident.

Nor, I suspect, will it "... prevent a repeat of such a tragedy...".

Yes 1 solider dead........if it carries on like this they will be catching up with the UK---

---but that wont happen ----because once again this accident is all because the Thais don't have a brain not like the British Army

UK Ministry of Defence discloses there is a death on training or exercise every six weeks

More than 1-in-20 deaths of soldiers, sailors and airmen happen during training or on exercises according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Defence.

How many Thai soldiers/conscripts were killed in accidents since 2000? (to compare with the linked article).

My guess (and I could be wrong) is that no figures are readily available. We only hear about such cases when they are extreme, when it happens to people we know, or when its a slow news day.

Unsurprisingly the Army chief blames the death of the young man on the lad himself. Perhaps this is normal Army practice to eliminate the weak from the strong among the new conscripts. Die and you are automatically released from conscription.

The drill master is an idiot. He didn't expect the fellow to suffer in the heat because he was "still young".

"Colonel Winthai insisted that the victim had not been abused by his drill master."

Odd. I would have thought that punishment causing death is pretty much the definition of 'abuse'. Maybe I've led a sheltered life...

But 5 gets you 10 he's back on the job today anyway. Army are 'good people' and 'good people' don't make mistakes and are never, every bad people. Not ever.

I think the spelling was incorrect - should be "dill master" coffee1.gif

A USA university football player died while running. The university was found liable for his death b/c the medical staff should have known he had sickle cell and monitored appropriately..the settlement was huge - multi millions awarded

Alas, this is Thailand and these are Thais. Thais have no lessons to be learned from the rest of the world because they have...

They'll be shouting that as the flames start to lick at their boots.

If they haven't yet learned the simple lesson that those in whom they were told to place their trust have fracked them sideways, they're not going to be able to learn anything more complicated...

Burn well...

Most of those in charge of basic and advanced training have gone thru the same training and are aware of the limits of the human

body to heat, lack of water, etc. It may have been the '' di '' had left someone else in charge as the man that died was a corporal, thus this was probably not basic training /conditioning. As I mentioned in a earlier post the withholding of liquids was a part of training to do without when required, of Thai special service personel training.

To withhold fluid while being punishmented, where fluid intake can be critial, to the point of death, would indicate someone made a error in judgement, resulting in a mans death. Doubt anymore will be heard of this which is usual for most all military screw ups.

To be fair, I think something similar happened to some SAS recruits not so long ago. Incidentally, I remember an old guy years ago, in the UK, telling me he used live ammunition when training WW2 commandos, and was allowed a 10 per cent death rate.
