US Ambassador Urges Investment Treaty

Featured Replies

Cambodia has been asked to accelerate the final negotiations for a bilateral investment treaty with the United States to pave the way for more American investment in the Kingdom. The US Embassy in Phnom Penh made the call yesterday at the launch of the American Restaurant Week to commemorate its July 4 Independence Day.

US Ambassador William A. Heidt told reporters that the United States was trying hard to link American firms with the Cambodian government in order to attract more US investment to the country. “We are spending a lot of time with American companies and letting them know about Cambodia in order to attract them here,” said Mr. Heidt.

“Therefore we suggest that the Cambodian government signs as soon as possible the Bilateral Investment Treaty with the United States to pave the way for more American businesses to come to Cambodia,” he added. Commenting on the American Restaurant Week, Mr. Heidt said there were about 100 US-owned restaurants operating in Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap.
