PHNOM PENH, June 28 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) on Tuesday commemorated the 65th anniversary of its birth, vowing to uphold peace and political stability, said CPP's President and Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

Addressing to some 10,000 party members and supporters at the party's headquarters in Phnom Penh, Hun Sen said peace and political stability are the most important factors for national development.

"The CPP adheres to firm position in safeguarding peace and political stability as necessary condition for development and people's peaceful life, while continuing to raise high the great banner of national solidarity," he said.

The prime minister said that the party has stood with the people and shared hardship and peace with them in all circumstances.

"Over the past 65 years, the CPP has always been together with our people to overcome various major historical stages," he said. "We fought against colonialism for national independence, the war created by the Republic Khmer and foreign invaders from 1970 through 1975."

Moreover, he said, the CPP struggled to liberate Cambodia from the Democratic Kampuchea in 1979 and has ruled the country since then.

"Fear, tragedy, national division, and loss that our people had suffered in the past have ended," the prime minister said. "We are living in a motherland that is in full peace, independence, firmly defended sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect of human rights, freedom, dignity of every Cambodian citizen and national reconciliation under the roof of one Constitution."
