Thailand and Myanmar agree to continue cooperation

BANGKOK, 1 July 2016 (NNT) - Myanmar is willing to consider repatriation of its war refugees in Thailand, according to Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon. Myanmar also expresses readiness to cooperate with Thailand to construct a new bridge to connect the two countries in Chiang Rai province.

The deputy PM on Thursday announced the results of his visit to Myanmar, saying there was more progress in terms of national security issues between the two countries. The two countries agreed to work together more seriously to tackle the problem of drug trafficking, Gen. Prawit said.

As for economic cooperation, Thailand and Myanmar agreed on the construction of the new bridge in Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai with the objective to stimulate trade and investment. The deputy premier expressed his confidence that the bridge would be able to efficiently connect special economic zones which played an important role in developing the quality of life of Thai and Myanmar people.

The deputy PM added that Myanmar's state counseller Aung San Suu Kyi and him agreed during their meeting to continue cooperation on border demarcation, assistance for war refugees, the Dawei special economic zone and welfare for Myanmar workers in Thailand.
