They didn't hit him - his face collided with the policeman's hand, he said.Everyone has said sorry after a video of the incident went viral on social media causing a lot of online criticism of the police for going over the top, reported Daily News. Now the cops want the poster of the clip to see if there is a case to answer.Top brass in the shape of acting police chief Sanit Mahatavorn turned out at a press conference yesterday with the father, 49 year old former news man Athipan Kunphiphat. His son Nithipong was knocked off his bike after failing to stop for police.Athiphan said he had spoken to his son who told him he was late for a work experience assignment and didn't realize it was a checkpoint. After a first officer tried to stop him another three tried. He said that the police did not hit his son - his face collided with the policeman's hand as he tried to stop him in the course of his duty. He added that he had spoken to the officers concerned and everyone had apologized to each other and he didn't want to press any charges in the matter."I would like to remind the public if they see a checkpoint to please slow down and cooperate," he added helpfully.Police said that the checkpoint, that was set up on June 30th when the clip was filmed, was there to check up on students who were feared to be fighting in the area.The father said that he was not responsible for posting the clip. Police have suggested that if the poster of the clip that started doing the rounds on July 1st is found they may face charges.Acting chief Sanit said that police always try to be polite and do their job properly and according to the law of the land. I find it difficult to believe that the poster of the vdo would face any such charges. Since when has it become illegal to post a vdo of an actual true to life occurrence that is uncensored, except for porn? That fact that the threat was made by the BIB leads me to believe that he did actually hit the man and knock him off. I've had 2 incidents similar to this. The first one, the cop told me to stop and I complied by braking hard, but as he flagged me down quite late I went about a metre or two past him before I was completely stopped. As I went past him, he grabbed my arm to stop me (I was stopping as quickly as I could anyway) and almost caused me to crash the bike with my gf on the back. He then tried to extort 200 Baht from me for being in the middle lane even though I was overtaking a stationary taxi that had blocked the left lane. Nice. Second incident was similar, he motioned me to pull over too late, I was happy to pull over but I didn't have the time or inclination to cut over 2 lanes of traffic on a greasy road surface without risking a crash. He ran into the road between 2 moving cars and swung a punch at me, contacting me on the shoulder as I passed. Nice. The unprofessional/haphazard way the police operate at these road blocks actually endanger people instead of making the roads safer. And why? I did not see the video so don't want to comment there but I have seen many people accelerate away from checkpoints, and a couple of occasions seen police doing pretty dangerous things to try and stop them. I was behind one at a checkpoint in Bangkok where clearly the young guy was trying to zip past despite it being obvious it was a checkpoint, so obviously his fault. However the policeman had a folder in his hand and he threw is frisby style at the rider as he was level, the rider ducked and it just skimmed and bounced off his head (he was not wearing a helmet). He didn't stop and still kept on going and got away, but could have easily been a nasty accident. Either way he was in the wrong in the first place and just trying to avoid a fine for no helmet and perhaps other things such as no license.. To answer your question I have been in a car drive by a woman and she approached a checkpoint and the cop wavered her over and she just continued driving. Its a way of life here and the cops have lots more coming down the pipe so they do not chase anyone. Its like shooting ducks in a barrel but some ducks do escape. Yes it was no doubt one of those "gravy train" check points and the BIB was trying to make the most of it. They always seem to use the "Box Canyon" approach in corralling victims. You have a captive audience and the Thais seem to play into it I only see about 50% helmet usage presuming this was a helmet check point. It seems like a game of chicken and I am all in favor of helmets. There always seems so much manpower tied up in these checkpoints while seriously there are more aggrevious crimes occurring all around us but then they require effort and are not like shooting fish in a barrel you win a prize Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Some of the ways that the cops behave here is terrible when it comes to stopping bikes. I have seen them jump out into the road and kick the front wheel out from under the biker, who was carrying a young female passenger causing the bike to highside and throw the two of them off into the road which was busy with traffic. Whilst I don't think it is wise to run a checkpoint if asked to stop, the BIB should be in position giving drivers enough time to brake and stop safely. If you are told by a cop to pullover , you should pullover.
