Thais change their name because of psychic?

I'm aware of this however I aways thought they just changed their names socially. Do they actually go through the legal process of changing their name?

Yes, but many Thai women do NOT change their last names when they get married.

That is a wesrern custom.... that not all Thai women follow.

I had a English friend whose name was Dave Hoy.

He married a Thai woman whose first name was Oy.

She did not want to change her last name when they were married..... because that would mean she would be known as Oy Hoy.

Believe it or not that is a true story.

The OP doesn't seem "bothered" as much as curious. In any event, you are right about many Westerners falling foul of superstition and wasting money on the supernatural, but they don't change their names because of it, which is the thrust of the OP's message

You are right about my comment relating to "bothered" I did read all the post and I had forgotten about the "appalled" bit so I am wrong to say what I did. However, your comment that the thrust is "thai bashing" is your chosen interpretation while the THRUST was definitely about the effect of superstition prompting a change of name. Personally, I think it IS stupid and that is a fact! And I am not Thai bashing!

I knew this Thai gf and I noticed she change her name on facebook. My first thought was she probably married but then I noticed she changed her first name as well so I thought maybe she is trying to hide from someone. I asked her best friend what's the reason behind and she told me she went to a psychic and she was told to change her name for better luck. No need to say more, I was appalled and thought this was a 1 of stupidity that I would not possibly ever see again.

To my surprise I met another thai women who also changed her name and I asked her what the reason behind and she told me it was also on a psychic recommendation because bad things kept happening to her so the psychic told her to change her name to change her luck.

And I thought I would not see something as absurd as the luk thep doll trend BS.

I've met two different people who've changed both their given and family names.

One of them even told me that her ENTIRE (immediate) family chanded their names, too.

I find it unusual, but hey, it's no skin of my ar*e.

My brother in law, 2 sister in laws have changed their names for better luck. But nothing has changed to improve their lives.

If I understand you correctly, you're not criticizing someone for changing their name, but rather them changing their name BECAUSE of superstition...correct? As has already been pointed out, the west has millions who live their lives guided by superstition. And that's not even including religious folks, who are arguably one in the same. So sir, if you're just picking on the Thais, you are in fact Thai-bashing.

My wife legally changed her given first name which was a very nice name at an early age to something rather long she considered lucky. I'm okay with it except needing to clear up the many different English spellings she gave me and that appear on many documents prior to us meeting. We've lock in on one now that we are married. At first she was chilly about it saying things like "don't worry the bank knows who I am honey" on international money transfers. I couldn't stop laughing and knew she was for me.

Fair enough. But if you look at the thread title, the OP is obviously attacking the Thais and Thais only. Heck, I know Thai people who have changed their names, although it's not very common and the reasons aren't always clear. But what difference would it make what the reasons are? Even if it was because of a psychic, is it any different than someone who names their child for religious reasons?

I have a Christian name and the thought of changing it never occurred to me. But if I did decide to change my name for my own personal reasons, what business is it of the OP?

Thanks for all the feedback on my "thai bashing" I will carefully give a lot of thoughts and reflect on the comments of those who said I am "thai bashing", I deeply care a lot about the opinions all the members in this forum. Lastly I mentioned it is stupid to change your name because of the opinion of a phychic, not being Thai.
