Fishing activities drop in light of serious illegal fishing suppression

BANGKOK, 12 July 2016 (NNT) – Fishing activities during the fist half of 2016 has dropped due to serious operations to eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to the OAE.

The Office of Agricultural Economics Deputy Secretary-General Jariya Sutthichaiya has revealed the outcome of the observation of fishing activities during June in the three Southern provinces of Thailand including Chumphon, Ranong, and Surat Thani. Findings show that the amount of catches in the first half of 2016 has reduced due to fewer fishing boats operating at sea, which is a result from the government's operations to eliminate the issue of IUU fishing.

Fishing boats now have to operate under stricter regulations, and are required to make port-in and port-out reports, labourer amount report, and file documents regarding sailing duration. Turbulent weather has also contributed to the lowered catches.

However, the production of Whiteleg shrimp in the first half of 2016 has slight increased due to the relief from the EMS disease that was widespread in 2013-2015, along with shrimp farmers' adjustment of their farming method by improving their selection of shrimp breeds, better water circulation control, and an improved farm hygiene.

More farmers are now interested in the Whiteleg shrimp due to its good selling price. Entrepreneurs have proposed that the government should provide training courses and introduce new farming technology, in order to regulate the direction of farming and fishing activities to improve as a whole.

So now they will all start growing white shrimps? I don't understand why shrimps are still expensive in Thailand, is somebody buying them all for export?

Kao pad khung now comes with 2 small shrimps in BKK, if you're lucky you'll find 3 of them.

Headline kind of reminded me of:

"Dodo bird hunting activity drops off in light of serious illegal hunting suppression"

"under stricter regulations" lol Ya mean now there will be a little more enforcement (probably sporadic and temporary) of regulations?

what regulations?

A friend of my wife invested all his money in a prawnfarm, it went well and he invested all his profit in a bigger one. Then suddenly all the prawns died and he was bankrupt.

He had no education at all about breeding prawns. Just try and see.

No surprise there. It seems like the Thai mentality doesn't allow for doing research of any kind for most things. Around here ventures are started w/o the minimal amount of understanding how to be successful or if there is a need for said service/product etc.

A timely piece of propaganda IMO.

With the EMS (early mortality syndrome) pathogen running wild in SE Asia it would take a brave man to put all his eggs in that basket.

This drop should mollify the EU's request for fewer fishing vessels to sustain fish populations. And the Prayut government doesn't have to overtly prevent fishing vessels for deploying. As much as Prayut dislikes foreign intrusion into his domestic policies by the EU and the USA, he has responded in terms of Thai exports to meet their expectations.

Normal 'Monkey see, Monkey do' practice in Thailand. If they see someone else doing something that they think they will make money from they copy it.

Somchai sees some baht to be made.

Somchai thinks the government should teach him how to do it and provide the technology. wai2.gifwai.gif

Must be the Thai version of:

entrepreneur

noun

a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.

Too lazy to even search the internet

Thais' seem so "childlike" and usually with their chests stuck out and wearing peacock feathers. What is seen after the "smoke clears" however is a different thing.
