Khao Yai national park starts using technology to detect visitors who might drive too fast, feed wildlife

NAKORN RATCHASIMA, 14 July 2016 (NNT) – Khao Yai national park in Nakorn Ratchasima province has started using technology to deal with visitors who might drive too fast or feed wildlife.

Khao Yai national park head Khanchit Srinopphawan said that a large number of wild monkeys in the national park have been killed in road accidents, prompting him to seek cooperation from the visitors to solve the problem.

Khao Yai national park has put up signboards at the national park's entrances to warn possible violators. Those who may notice any motorists speeding over 60 kilometers per hour or stop to feed the wildlife are advised to take photos and send them to Khao Yai national park's facebook page.

Park officials will determine a fine and send the vehicles' license plate numbers to the nearest checkpoint. If such violation is repeated, the vehicle will be blacklisted.

Khao Yai national park has coordinated with the Department of Highways to install speed-detecting cameras to cope with motorists speeding over 60 kilometers per hour in the national park area.

And for farang the fine is tenfoulded like the entrance to the park?

Park officials now have the amazing technology of being able to determine the speed of a car from a photo.

They have them in Bangkok so why not? However, first thing struck me was that drivers would be so selfishly moronic they would speed through a bloody national park. But having lived here awhile should not be a surprise just depressing.

Why not send the fine to the homeaddress of the owner? That's how they do it in BKK as well. Picture included

Speed cameras need a budget, right? Kerching!

Assuming they won't be substandard, overpriced or fakes, how long until they stop working?

Followed quickly by another request for more budget? Double kerching!

These aren't speed cameras, if I am reading the article right. They are asking people to take pictures of speeding cars and then forwarding the pictures to park officials. The officials will then determine a fine.

Another cunning plan.

They should ban cars driving through Khao Yai altogether,it's a National park

and wildlife sanctuary, cars driving around Elephants on the road is unexceptional,

but as with a lot of things its all about money and that comes first.

Yes. It's called RADAR. In wide use since the 1960's.

Yes, send a vehicles' license plate numbers to the nearest Park checkpoint and see how fast the accused can say Defamation Lawsuit against both the picture taker and the Park officials.

9 out of 10 cars break the speed limit in the park. If you do drive at the limit you get vehicles driving inches from your rear bumper and/or overtaking on blind bends and crests. It is very popular with motorbike clubs who enjoy the winding road with its good surface and views and who are not really there to visit the park, just on a drive-through. As long as it remains a through road, it will have excessive traffic much of which will not observe the limit. There are two things which would really help, although they are not likely to happen.

1. Close the central section of road to all except Park vehicles so a through trip is no longer an option.

2. Forget the extra charge for foreigners, instead charge for ALL private vehicles at 200 baht per seat. (1000 baht for the standard car with 2 in front and 3 behind. More for people carriers etc) Passenger vans, songthaews etc are not included in this. Provide car parks at the entrance gates and a good, cheap, frequent passenger van and songthaew service visiting all the tourist spots in the park to encourage visitors out of their own vehicles.
