Cambodia in Davis Cup Upset

Cambodia’s Davis Cup campaign came to a disappointing conclusion on Saturday after a defeat to Turkmenistan in the Asia/Oceania relegation group III playoff at the Esteghlal International Tennis in Tehran, Iran. Cambodia had overcome Singapore by 2-1 on Friday, but would need to find a way past pool A relegation candidates Turkmenistan to stave off relegation and secure their group III spot for 2017 competition.

However, Yuruy Roguskiy and Isa Mammetgulyyev were in no mood for niceties as they dispatched both Nysan Tan and Bun Kenny in straight sets in their singles clashes.

Samneang Long joined the fray with youngster Tan for a meaningless third doubles rubber to snatch a match for the Southeast Asians, although the loss will nevertheless see the Kingdom drop back down into group IV for next year’s cup. They will be joined in the group by regional rivals Singapore, who were whitewashed 3-0 by Pacific Oceania in the other relegation playoff.
