Cars and motorized carts illegally importing fertilizer from Thailand to Cambodia through the O’Bey Choan border checkpoint were stopped in Banteay Meanchey province’s O’Chrov district opposite Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province on Friday morning, according to district police officials. An O’Chrov district police official who requested anonymity confirmed the crackdown and said officials at the provincial department of agriculture were in charge of the operation.

“The operation happened the day before yesterday. The provincial department officials and the border officials are the ones who took part in the crackdown on the illegal import. Our police did not join in the operation,” he said. According to a shared post on Facebook by the Banteay Meanchey provincial department of agriculture, more than 60 Camry cars, Nissan pickup trucks and motorized carts were stopped in the morning and afternoon on Friday as they carried bags of illegal fertilizer amounting to thousands of kilograms across the border for resale and distribution in Banteay Meanchey province.

The department’s post added that border regional military Unit 5 was usually the one in charge of imports. The import of unauthorized fertilizer is a violation of copyright laws. Border military officials could not be reached for comment.
