Story by Albert Jack

PATTAYA: -- During the afternoon of July 18 Nongprue Police Station announced the arrest of Manop (Noom) Boothcharown, a fifty-five year old from Rayong, on multiple charges of car burglary.

On June 20th a Mr Nimit Ketnet (34) was fishing with his girlfriend at Mabprachan Reservoir and had parked his red Honda nearby. When they returned they discovered the car had been broken into and four gold-framed amulets and a wallet with 14,000 baht in cash had been stolen.

Investigating officers noticed that the same offence had been recorded several other times and after further car thefts were reported they decided to set a trap for the thief.

On July 17 officers left a car in the same location and retreated to a safe distance to observe. At midday Mr Manop appeared and circled the car several times on his red and black Yamaha Spark. Then he approached the vehicle and then, using a sophisticated technique, attempted to break through the window with a screwdriver.

What was his sophisticated technique??? A hammer??

Mr Ketnet arrived and was able to point him out to officers as the man he had seen close to his car before it was violated in June. He said, ‘that’s him.’

A nice bit of pointing from Mr Ketnet in the photos.

I would like further details as to the method he adopted as he "violated" the car.

What was his sophisticated technique??? A hammer??

Nope, a screwdriver.

As a side issue, I note an increase in the use of screwdrivers in criminal activity. Perhaps it is time for the introduction of background checks prior to screwdriver purchases. A register of screwdriver owners should also be compiled.

Better safe than sorry.

Serial car thiefs should be taken out back and shot.

auction off his Yamaha Spark...take his wheels
