Depuytrens Contracture

I have Depuytrens contracture in both hands. It is quite bad although both hands usable just about.

I am unable to leave Thailand due to a malicious prosecution against me ( a not unusual Thai tactic when you sue bad people). I really was not thinking about having treatment in Thailand as the condition affects mainly Northern Europeans and Thai doctors probably are less familiar with treatment.

Given my circumstances it seems I will have to have treatment here. I note a thread from 6 years back with some useful though dated information.

Has anyone had successful treatment in Thailand recently and if so could they please give details on the procedure, location and cost with any other info of relevamce and if possible please PM any contact information. Thanks folks.

I have the same problem but only in one hand. Had it for years and fortunately it never seems to get any worse. I believe you need a real specialist to correct the problem as it is a very delicate operation.

Hi i read your question and i can offer some really good advice, i have the same condition in both hands , i had my right hand operated on last December with great results , the doctor that did the operation was .

PROF.DR.PANUPAN SONGCHAROEN

I first tracked him down to one of the several hospitals that he consults at , PHYTHAI hospital , they wanted in excess of 250,000 baht per hand for the surgery, i decided to get several other estimates for the surgery to see if this was a reasonable estimate, my suspicions were correct even bumrungrad hospital was a little cheaper. was cheaper .

So i decided to do a little research and tracked Dr Panupan down to another hospital , chaophya hospital , he consults once a week on Thursday evenings from 6pm - 7pm , so i made my way to the hospital and registered and made an appointment to see the doctor.

After consulting with the doctor i scheduled to have my operation on my right hand a month later , total cost 150,000 baht (100,000 baht saved)

The hospital is a little out of the way if you do not have a car , however the service is 2nd to none i have experienced here in Thailand , initially it does not look the most modern of establishments ,but do not worry the facilities and staff are excellent .

I had to check a day prior to the operation for minor tests , all relevant to having surgery , my room was spacious and clean with full true tv package , i paid the initial amount of 150,000 baht on arrival to English speaking financial staff , i have to say it was a breeze.

I had the operation in the morning and all the surgery team were fantastic , i did not feel a thing and awoke several hours late with little or no pain , i was a little concerned as to maybe the extra on my bill would amount to extra expense as in the past other hospitals tend to pad the bill with expensive medication etc

When i checked out the next day (you stay in 2 nights in total) my extras expenses amounted to 150 baht , this was for my food that i had ordered (food not included) PROF.DR.PANUPAN SONGCHAROEN Is a very experienced hand surgeon and after talking with him you will be more than comfortable with having him as your surgeon, the results on my hand are fantastic and i will be having my other hand done early next year , i have no scarring as such which surprised me after looking on line at the pictures of other peoples surgery , i have included i link to PROF.DR.PANUPAN SONGCHAROEN however this is to phyathai hospital , do not be put off save yourself a lot of money and go to Chaophya hospital you will get the best of care at a great price.

Just to follow up i normally only read Thai visa and never post but i decided to register and post for the 1st time . if i can be of any further help just reply to the thread as i am not to sure how personal messages etc work on Thai visa , getting to the hospital takes a little while so leave in plenty of time for any appointment , i took the bts over the river then 100 baht motorbike from there which takes a round 20 minutes , getting back is a lot easier you can get a taxi from outside the hospital or a motorbike one again but it is well worth the inconvenience in the long run, i found the hospital website really hard work booking an appointment , so i went and physically made the appointment and registered then returned a few days later to see the doctor , it may seem a bit time consuming to do this but 100.000 baht saving to have the same doctor to do the same operation is worth the time

Hi that is no problem , there is just one other thing i for got to mention as regards unwanted medication etc , when you consult doctor panupan advise him of your concerns regarding this , he will then instruct the hospital not to prescribe any medication other than what he has prescribed himself , hence you will not pay for over priced paracetamol etc and he is a really down to earth guy and did not mind that i had tracked him down to the cheaper hospital (his fee would have been more elsewhere) , in fact he was very understanding about the need to keep the costs down , he told me he would continue to perform surgery for the next 5 years then he was going in to teaching .

I had been putting off this operation for sometime after reading that the condition could come back and some of the scars left on people i had seen on the internet , the truth of the matter is the sooner you get it done the better the chances of your hands regaining full function , apart from a little numbness for a few weeks , which now has completely gone my hand has returned to normal , scars virtually unnoticeable and my hand before surgery was quite bad .

Once again i cannot recommend this doctor and the hospital enough for all there help

  • 3 weeks later...

I have DC in both hands, mainly in the palm for both third fingers. I am very hesitant to try surgury as my mother had it and within 18 months the finger was the same again. I believe there is an injection available now (certainly in the UK) but when i enquired at on hospital, they basically said it doesnt work (which i assume meant they had either never heard of it or didnt have it). From researching the injection (Xiaflex) i understand it works best for those where the problem is mainly in the plam rather than the finger (as is my case). I have not checked since 2 years ago and perhaps Xiaflex is now available here.

regards
