Favour giving, party ban to take place from 6pm of 6 Aug until referendum ends

BANGKOK, 28 July 2016 (NNT) – Acts of favour and celebratory events will be banned from 6 p.m. of 6 August 2016 onwards until the referendum is concluded, according to the EC.

The Election Commission's Deputy Secretary-General on Investigation and Adjudication Dudsadee Pornsuksawat has revealed acts of favour which include the sales or distribution of alcohol, gifts, or hosting a feast or party, will be prohibited prior to the referendum, starting from 6 p.m. of 6 August 2016 onwards. The prohibition will be lifted once the public referendum is concluded.

On free transportation services for the general public to travel to their voting stations, the EC deputy secretary-general has said the Referendum Act prohibits this action if it is done to influence the general public's vote. However, the law does not prohibit the transporation services provided government agencies, as the state is obliged to service citizens facing difficulties in accessing voting stations. Although services from government agencies are allowed, they must be verified through a special permit from the EC.

The EC's deputy secretary-general has added the general public can freely express their opinion, but must remain within legal limits. The EC has dispatched information units to all provinces to clarify to the public which actions are in violation of the law.

The EC has also prepared a special committee to investigate all objections made regarding the constitutional referendum.
