Vietnamese Military Remains Get Repatriated

From 2015 to 2016, as many as 748 sets of remains belonging to Vietnamese soldiers who died in the Kingdom between 1979 and 1989 were repatriated, according to a local news report on Tuesday. Cambodian National Defense Ministry spokesman General Chhum Socheat told Khmer Times that a joint group of Cambodian and Vietnamese researchers worked together to find the locations of the fallen Vietnamese soldiers.

“The retrieval of Vietnamese soldiers’ remains is not easy, because some dead Vietnamese troops were buried in collective graves on battlefields we don’t know the exact locations of due to a lack of information,” Gen. Socheat said. “However, some remains of soldiers were found after information was provided by local people.” He added that Cambodia and Vietnam worked together to repatriate the remains of Vietnamese soldiers.

“Those remains were Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who were sent to the Kingdom in 1979 to help Cambodian people who suffered during the Pol Pot regime from 1975 to 1979.” According to Vietnam News, during the 15th meeting of the Cambodian and Vietnamese special task committees in Ho Chi Minh City this week, Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Le Chiem, said he appreciated his Cambodian counterparts on the special task committee for the efficient repatriation of soldiers’ remains.
