Authorities ready security measures ahead of public referendum

BANGKOK, 2 August 2016 (NNT) - Authorities have readied measures to ensure safety and security ahead of and during the upcoming public referendum.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon said that there is no need for any extra security program before the public referendum on August 7, while denying reports that he has ordered all military personnel to cast their votes to endorse the draft charter.

Gen. Prawit added that the government will remain in office and continue the implementation of all steps in the national reform roadmap no matter how the referendum result turns out.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Gen. Anupong Paochinda said that a special safety center has already been set up to ensure the referendum will proceed smoothly and the new unit will work collaboratively with the Internal Security Operations Command and the police, in the areas of intelligence and problem-solving.

In addition, National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda said that he isn't worried about the movement of groups, which oppose the draft charter and confirmed that the police are now ready for the security program to be executed at all voting units.
